Off up to Edinburgh on Friday, a quick look on google maps gives some very differing routes so which way is the best. Totally non-PH way please, minimal twisties and minimal big hills as I will be towing the Caravan paperbag and getting a massive 16 mpg yikes if I'm lucky

I would probably take the M1 then head towards the A1M then A1 all the way - bit of a boring drive but with the caravan probably the easiest.

Thanks Pabl0, that was what I was thinking, just looking for a second opinion.

Only real alternative is Mway all the way, M1/M62/M6/M74/M8. A bit longer but probably no slower.

A1,A66 then M6. Much better than A1 all the way. I live in Doncaster and visit my sister who lives at RAF Leuchars and this is definatly the way to go.

TBH @ 16mpg and presumably with a reasonable sized van on the back anything other than up the East Coast A1 is probably a non starter. At least even if the bit of the A1 after Morpeth drags and seems to take for ever iirc it's reasonably flat, all the other ways are hilly and at least an extra 2/3 gallons worth of gas. frown

Depends where you are in Nottingham tbh but I wouldn't exclude heading up the A614 and joining the A1 up by Clumber.

Thanks for the replies everyone, looks like it's the A614 (caravan is kept just off this) then A1 all the way then, at least there will be no disagreements with the navigator smile

Memories. I was at University in St Andrews in the late seventies and lived in West Bridgford - and I must have driven this route about 20 times.

If I was visiting Newcastle it was A614, A1, A696 and A68.

If avoiding Newcastle it was A614, A1, A68.

Never driven the A1 route all the way for some reason.

Heard rumours that the A68 is now disfigured with speed cameras, and it's a bit hilly. Still, thanks for the memories - when 5 star fuel was 75p a gallon.

I tended to prefer the A697 from near Morpeth through Coldstream until even that got camera infested.

I wish, 75p per 16 miles is a lot more palatable than £6 per 16 miles. Ouch wish I hadn't have thought that with 250+ miles to do.

Bit late, but from Nottingham I would look at the A50 to Stoke then M6, M74 and M8.
