I'm on the search for a new mower and would appreciate any recommendations.

I currently have an electric Flymo which is crap and has done a passable impersonation of a plough on our fairly
uneven lawn.

So I'm thinking of a model with wheels for greater ground clearance - electric or petrol powered, I'm not fussed.

Budget is around £150 - will this get me anything half-decent.
I'm not after bowling-green finish, just something which will cut the grass without gouging the lawn to pieces.

If the lawn is bumpy, then any mower is going to carve it up. More ground clearance will just give you larger areas where nothing is cut at all. You need to solve the problem, not the symptoms!

Buy one of these and it should flatten out most of the bumps. It works best around this time of year when the ground is still soft. Also it will take several passes.

^^^ This man speaks sense. Get the ground rolled and flattened as best as you can first.

I was in a similar situation, our years-old hover mover no longer really hovered. The blade was wrecked though numerous stone strikes and it preferred to rip grass from the ground rather than cut it. Any slight rises were chopped off completely - utter nightmare.

Then we spent £85 on a Bosch.

It got great reviews from Amazon, and to be honest it could never have been worse than the not-hover mower that we had. It has wheels for a start, grass collection mechanism that actually works, height adjustable etc. I forget the exact model, but it's probably still around the same price this year. Used it at the weekend and what an utter joy it us. Makes a crap job pretty much oksmile

What you need to start with is "The Lawn Expert" by D. G. Hessayon.

A roller can cause more damage than it solves. If the ground is already compacted a roller will make it worse.

If your hover gouges then the setting is wrong. You should be able to raise the cut by swapping spacers between blade and motor. If it no longer hovers then the blade probably needs sharpening. if the blade cannot be sharpened replacement blades are cheaper than new mowers.

Hayter make a good mower. Theres that much choice when it comes to mowers, I would try and view a couple before you make your mind up.

Our lawn is fairly uneven but the grass is thick enough that on the right setting it doesn't decapitate the lumps and the grass in the dips is longer so it looks pretty good.

I got a Honda Izy as they do exactly what they say on the tin.

Lidl have a decent looking electric mower for £89 in this week - might be worth a look.
