Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Unveiled

You can't keep a good motor down; 6.2 V8 power for AMG C-class coupe

This is the all-but-inevitable AMG version of the new C-class coupe (although we most definitely mean that in a good way), which is due to make its in-the-metal debut at the New York motor show next month.

There had been whispers that the new car would get a non-turbo version of the new 5.5-litre twin-turbo AMG V8 unit (as seen in the CLS63 AMG), but it seems that the 6208cc naturally aspirated V8 gets another new installation - and a stay of execution for now.

As a result the new C63 AMG coupe gets 451bhp (or 481bhp with the optional AMG Development pack) and 442lb ft of torque - in other words the same as the saloon and coupe C63 AMGs.

That'll be enough to push the new Merc to 62mph from rest in 4.4secs and on to the ubiquitous electronically limited 155mph top speed (which is upped to 4.3secs and 174mph for the Development pack version).

Power goes to the rear wheels via the AMG-specific SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed transmission, which features a wet start-up clutch in place of the traditional torque converter, helping to reduce power losses and improve fuel consumption.

The most obvious evidence for this is the rotary control for selecting the C, S, S+ and M transmission modes (and RACE START launch control) situated on the centre console.

Inevitably, AMG has also stiffened the suspension, widened the tracks, sharpened the steering up, and bolted on bigger wheels and tyres, while the interior has also received the usual sporty AMG upgrade.

Do they offer a "Stealth Pack" with sensible wheels and a rear end without the quad pipes?

That would be pretty nice...

Compared to most fast cars today, I think this is very restrained already? Paint it in a less shouty hue, add silver wheels and most won't bat an eyelid.

I like it.

Estate?

Don't actually like the look of the coupe, prefer the saloon's looks.

Hmm.

Fantastic engine mechanical package, but I don't like the looks as much as I thought I would.

Perhaps it's the angle of the shots or the car colour but it looks a little 'tall' to me, not a million miles away from a 1 series coupe.

I prefer the more svelte looks of the CLK63 AMG myself.

It's a bit difficult to see how noticeable the flared wheel arches are in that particular colour, but I know what you mean. I have found a few of the recent Mercs a bit OTT, and this one does look very "high waisted" too.

I must say, I'm surprised at you though. I didn't think you usually liked Mercs. wink

So does this now take over the clk?

Ive always quite wondered myself how the E-Class coupe sits in the pack, sure thats just something to pick if you dont want a CL?

Thats a cracking looking car, love the side profile;

More than a little hint of M3 in there IMHO.

The E Class Coupe is a softer, more mature and luxurious take. The C Class Coupe is the one for thrusting young types.

I for one am awaiting the mooted C Class AMG Black Edition with much interest.

I wasn't sure at first but from that shot I actually think it will look meatier in a different colour. Although the rear end shots in the video don't say AMG to me (apart from the quads). I know there are people who prefer subtler visuals, I was hoping it would lean towards the AMG Black ethos, being a coupe an' all.

This is a nice car, but not that new one; it is horrid from the front...
