DIY Servicing?

Hi,

Does anyone do their own Cerbera servicing? If I was to service one myself, on time, compitently and keeping recipts what would happen to the re-sale value?

I think the resale would suffer to be honest, and you may find that it attracts less interest when you put it up for sale. Buyers like paperwork and a fully serviced car by a good specialist will be easier to sell in my opinion BUT if you can prove to a buyer that you are handy with the spanners and know what you are doing then I could be wrong. I've changed a lot of components on my car but still it gets serviced buy a specialist for 6k/12k services. It confirms the mileage as well and gives me peace of mind that all is well. Shop about and you may find that there are some cheaper specialists out there for servicing.

Personally I wouldnt consider a car with diy servicing. But as cerbs get older the servicing records deteriorate anyway. An excellent car with excellent history will always be worth more in my book.

I would much more likely buy off an enthusiast who's looked after, and knows, his car than someone who knoes nothing.
Having said that, I bought from a TVR dealer and got a year's warranty.

Ive just come from Dulfords and their 12k service is 520 quid,including the tappets.This i think is fairly good i am going to have her serviced every year there,just for piece of mind really.I have in the past skimped on a map set up after some changes to induction and exhaust,and 4 months later the motor detonatedthe map session was 600 quid-new motor and all the bits to go with it 8500.Really my point is is 500 quid worth not getting it done,i will do all the jobs on mine myself as this is one reason i am into cars,yes i can build engines etc but sometimes it is nice to see that garage reciept.Would also agree that it is nice to buy from a persom who knows the car really well,but in the real world how many people are really that spanner happy or have the time.;)

if you dont want to sell your cerb i wouldnt care about you doing the cerb servicing yourself. It will still sell if you do the cerb servicing yourself but not so quickly.

i have a mate (a very rich one) who bought his porsche cash and lets the local chinese garage arounnd the corner do his servicing.. but he just doesnt care about the resell value (because he has money)

he also didnt know it was a convertible but that another story! anyway the point is, when you ask a bloke who did the servicing and he says oh i did it or my mate did it , most of the time the buyer gets worried.

I do mine and I'd have no problem buying a car with limited dealer servicing or even none.

Providing people get the right advice and are mechanically minded then there's no reason why home servicing can't be as good or better than a dealer.

I service mine . Well, I am being taught by someone very experienced with TVR's. I do it because it fascinates me and I like to understand what's going on with the car.

My view is, that because I am learning, I am super careful with every point, I don't 'gloss over' things. If in doubt I ask. And for every job I do on the car, I try and do another one which is linked, thereby not only staying on top of the work, but actually staying one step ahead hopefully!

I would be just as happy to purchase a car from someone who loves it, is interested in it and cares for it. Particularly a Cerbera. But it's all very personal of course

Agree, after looking at mine the services were just stamps in the book, they bore no relation to work carried out on the car, I also had my fingers burnt by a highly thought of indie, so all servicing will be done by me or supervised by me and documented.
The only thing it will go into someone for is the 12,000 mile valve check and re-adjust, I don't have much faith with so called sepcialists at the moment.

I believe that you can download the tvr sevicing schedules.If you were to print those off tick each section as youve done it and provide receipt to prove that you bought the bits required maybe take the odd picture then that is as good as you can do for a service. I would have no problems buying a car that has been done in that way.At the end of the day youve done more than most independent garages by doing it that way.
