flattening a lawn
Discussion
I have a serious problem with our lawn.
Its so bumpy i spill the beer while using our ride on mower
So I tried last year to break out the big guns and ran around with a 2 ton road roller and its still damn bumpy.
To add to the problems
There is an acre of grass
It is full of trees
Not very full of grass
Very full of weeds
It floods reguarly
There is bugger all top soil
There is massive boulders hidden within a few inches of the top
Rabbits like digging in the lawn
So what cheap and easy solution is there to make the lawn less like a field and more like a lawn.

Chain harrows. They'll do a wonderful job of tearing out the thatch and scrub, and not a very good job of making anything other than minor ripples vaguely flat.
That sounds like a planBig machinery
Its over an acre we are talking about not the postage stamps you have down south hence not so keen on the idea of walking around with a small bag of soil and grass seed
If a 2t road roller didn't flatten them, chain harrows aren't going to help. More to the point, a ride-on mower won't have a cat in hells chance of pulling a decent set of harrows anyway.
Top dress it - always try to fill in depressions, not flatten bumps, else you're creating a world of hassle for yourself with overcompacted soil.

There is an acre of grass Is the area greater than 1 acre?
It is full of trees How many trees? Do you want to keep them?
It floods reguarly this needs attention unless you want a water meadow.
There is bugger all top soil Grass doesn't need miuch
There is massive boulders hidden within a few inches of the top Providing they are not under the bumps they should not be a problem.
Rabbits like digging in the lawn Man with rifle.

If the problems are as bad as you describe there are no cheap and easy solutions. Get "The Lawn Expert" by D. G. Hessayon. That is the cheapest part of the solution. There is an acre of grass Is the area greater than 1 acre?

By the sound of it the only way to get a good lawn is to start from scratch. It will be hard work.
