In a similar vein to the stupid things non petrolheads say thread, but specific to the idle, I'll informed chatter that goes on in pubs across the land.

My contribution from this evening:
Chap at pub:ere mate you know about cars, d'you know much about bikes?
Me: enough to get by.
CAP:how does the diff on a bike work?it must be tiny to fit in the rear wheel hub
Me: it doesn't have one
CAP: so how does the bike account for difference in speed between the rear wheel and the gearbox?
Me: it doesn't
CAP: so what happens if the driver locks the wheel under braking
Me: if he's in gear and doesn't declutch he'll stall
CAP: surely that's dangerous
Me: I don't think were getting anywhere

The best examples of such nonsense please!

Not only does this person not understand how bikes work, he doesn't even understand what a diff does.

Are you sure he didn't mean a slipper clutch?

Go back to the pub and say : If the engine seizes at 90, it stretches the chain, and leaves lots of skid marks, before the rider remembers to pull in the clutch. The diff is also made of rubber.

Not pub chat, but something I overheard a few years ago at Claycross motorcycles.
I'm quietly browsing the bikes, when a salesman approaches a couple of guys close by and asks them if they want any help. "yeah" pipes up one guy. "I'm after a sports bike. My mate here knows about bikes and is here to help me choose".
"OK", says salesman, "is there anything in particular you had in mind".
Knowledgeable matey pipes up, "he's after something sporty. Something that looks cool. With a really wide back tyre".

I don't think so because his gripe was that the chain needed to rotate at gearbox output speed (obviously) but there needed to be a diff in the rear wheel hub to allow the wheel to rotate at different speeds to the chain (which has a constrained speed because of the gearbox).

I'm concerned he might think that there is a ratchet similar to that of a push bike, but that would work the opposite way round (as in fast wheel slow chain not fast chain slow (ie locked up) wheel))
