Football Photography?

I always see photos on Facebook from local football matches, normally with a huge watermark across it.

Where do the photographers make any money from it, do the teams ask for a photographer and pay them, or do the teams/players/media pay for the unwatermarked copies? (ETA: or is there even any money to be made at local games?).

The teams are mainly student teams, but I was thinking about taking some pictures at their match this weekend, making a new Facebook and seeing how it goes?

Anyone have any tips, advice?

The PBT (poor bloody tog) will turn up and do it for nothing, and hope to make some beer money selling prints to the players. That is why he will have a proper job!

By all means do it for the experience and camera/technique practice but don't expect to earn anything. £5 will then be a bonus.

What you'll probably find is as soon as they'll get near Facebook people will copy them, tag them, crop them, make them profile pics and generally do other things that will rub you up the wrong way.

They'll probably also not be looking at it the same as you are - you see a revenue stream, they see a picture of themselves. They're in it, copyright, usage and payment just isnt going to come into it in 99% of cases

Nowt wrong with any of that if thats what you want to spend time doing (genuinely)

That's the idea really, I'm at University. They're Gaelic matches which some of my mates would be heading out to anyway, and the odd one would be playing.

Im trying to gauge if I could make any (and I literraly mean any) for my time out there.. I'm not expecting it to pay anything crazy.

id pay a few quid for a good picture of me playing footie. go and speak to the football team manager and get them to speak to the team about it

I cover the odd game for a local football team in which some mates play. They give me around £40 to cover expenses of getting to the match etc, plus a few quid in my pocket. It works quite well really, you don't make much money from it when you like at it from a £ per hour view, but i get an enjoyable day doing photography plus a bit of extra cash.
