Sub 10k, 40+ MPG and PH approved - Help!

As the fuel cost increase we are thinking of selling the 320CLK and getting something that matches the criteria below...

Must be practical.
seat 4 in comfort.
Reliable.
Get 40+ MPG.
Around the 10k mark.
Must be a little bit interesting/unusual/PH style!

I open the floor...

Alfa GTV V6
So we are more than covered on the fun side of things.

E92 320d. I love mine - lovely balanced handling, not hugely heavy, extremely comfortable on long distances, and on the standard wheels it rides nicely too. You'll probably average 40-45mpg and get 50-55 on a motorway run.

Ford Mondeo ST TDCI.

Quick Car, about £6k to buy, and will easily return 40mpg, 50+mpg on long motorway trips. Geat looking thing too, well equipped, very practical. But yet still PH approved!

Ohhh, I do like the jags but the Mrs will be driving it a fair bit and don't think she will be quite as taken with it!

As for the BMW's, I do like the 530d but just find it a bit run of the mill looking.

Like a 320 d but heavily breathed on. It just about passes the PH test, but sips fuel like a newborn wren.
