Would like some suggestions on how to deal with a bully in the workplace please.

The points to note is it is a small company with only 12 employees and its the MD who is the bully!!

If it is the MD doing the bullying then you are probably out of luck, realistically in that position they are either:

1) Threatened by you in some way, hence bullying you as a way to remove you.

2) A straight up ***hole who likes to bully everyone.

In either scenario what can you really do to the MD?, not a great deal, take it through the correct procedures (if the company even has any, many small businesses don't) such as logging a grievance and you will surely succeed in pissing him off which will probably just cause the bullying to escalate rather than do any real damage to him or bringing any change.

Not a good situation to be in but reality he is the MD and probably isn't going anywhere.

Was in a similar position myself once, department head was on a massive power trip and causing havoc all over when those above weren't looking, I rebelled for a bit, then realised I was only hurting myself and left.

Next time he says/does anything infront of other workers just confidently ask him "do you have a problem?" (or something along those lines)

If he says yes, you can defend yourself and explain why he is wrong about you

If he says no, jokingly tell him to stop winding you up

Either way, the office + MD will get respect for you (not saying they don't already, I don't know). You can not cacoon yourself and just take it, answer back. You really have nothing to loose if it is having a bad a/effect on you

Keep a record of all incidents to build a case against him,but often questioning there bullying in front of others as in previous post is often a good way.Make him look a tool.

Again thank you all for your comments.

The work environment is now becoming quite unbearable and I will be confronting the md today.

The only time my bh boss backed off was when I had spoken to other staff members to seek opinion and then, in an incredibly calm and impersonal manner, told her that her behaviour was inappropriate and affected productivity of staff and morale.

Worked for a few weeks but the silly bh boss has a short memory.

Good luck, give the little tt hell

I have a similar but equally annoying problem with a 'control-freak' as per my other thread. Tries to badger me just before i go on holiday (like today) knowing full well i want to leave dead on 6 - it's happened so often i know he's being a crafty little sh8t. My solution is literally to care as little as possible and ignore him - getting paid nicely at consultant rates so i as well whilst looking for my next role. You have to be confident when dealing with c*nts - they will prey on any insecurities you may have.

If it's the MD there isn't much you can do, but bide your time and exit the stage.

i wish my boss wasn't quite so control freak

he micromanages everyone, and by micro manage i mean he has ALL emails to and from the company copied to him. if hew hasn't seen you reply in under an hour (bearing in mind customer facing role barely 2 minutes to yourself all day, inc most days no lunchbreak (yes i know we should take them but trust me some days you just haven't got time) ) he will email you and your supervisor to check whats happening.
he goes thro the system and checks the details of customers and if we've missed something minute ie a mobile no or an email address (neither necessary in our line of work) he is on to us to call the customer up and almost bully them for the details.

i swear he's an android sent from the future to destroy morale wherever he goes!

depending on what type of individual he is you can either talk to him or send him the dreaded mail. This does work since the type who will blow up immediately has to read the whole thing and you have to be off the premises when you send it. That way when you go into work and get called in he has had chance to digest and consider his position. After that a sensible conversation will follow or you will have to look for a new job. The mail should be fact, you cannot get fired for facts.
