Mondeo TDDI of 2001'ish (Mk3) vintage should do that - TDCi does it too but out of your price range I think. A Pug 306 was once one I looked at with similar thoughts to you from the sound of it

We have a mitsubishi space star d-id on a 53 plate that only cost £1300, that does 50mpg no problems.

The 406 Hdi (especially estate) with the low(er) output engine should be a little cheaper plus it's handy for taking stuff do the dump.

I've had a x2 306 D-turbo's and never got 50mpg, nearer 38. The best BY FAR was a non turbo Golf 1.9D - 50mpg wasn't a problem.

Probably because over the past few years the kind of person who has started buying 306 Dturbos is the traditional customer of Barried XR3is and Nova GTEs, now they like the easy tuning with diesel.

Had an old "Audi 80 Diesel Turbo" for a few weeks, think it was on a H plate. We reckoned it was probably closing in on 60mpg.

+1 for this, very relaxing to drive too so its not difficult to keep the speed down (unlike in my other cars), comfortable place to be and with the fake wood etc its look quite nice inside too with the cream interior, there one for sale here: http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2632001.htm

My Vectra B 2.2 DTi always does 50mpg+ on its weekly 600 mile commute. Cost me 1600 quid 12 months ago.

Servicing and parts are reasonable and its been pretty reliable for an old 'un

Yep. Audi A4 1.9TDi, don't think you'll find anything comfier/better-appointed for the money, and they're decent to insure too.

This was using crapfused.com, rang my current insurers who offered a much more reasonable £370. Will look into a 406 too.

Tempted by a 306 as they're a known quantity, between my mum and my sisters we've had 5 of them over the years. One D, 2xDT, an XSi, and an HDI. DT would be my pick. I know they'll do the MPG and they're not a bad pedal.

Close, but no cigar. Looking into getting my bike license to get a weekend toy, hence the econobox what car thread!
