PH Photography Sessions 2011

PH heads back to the studio for 2011 with a new round of studio sessions

Following the success of the 2010 PistonHeads photography sessions, here are the dates for the 2011 events for those who are interested in joining us this year.

As with last year, we will be using the large studio based within Teddington Studios, Middlesex where there is ample safe parking, a full selection of studio equipment and it's also the home of our pro snapper Pete Spinney.

Pete not only manages the studios, he also has extensive knowledge in all manner of photography ranging from motorsport to magazine covers. Best of all he is great at giving tuition in an easy-to-follow style.

We will run three different types of session in 2011:

Studio Shooting: Pete teaches the methods used to capture a car in the style that you would see on a magazine front cover. We'll walk you through various angles, all working together (using your own camera) to achieve the perfect shot. After lunch (included) we invite you to bring your own cars into the studio (we can usually shoot approx six cars during this time) to help you put the skills learned in the morning into practise. Pete will be on hand throughout the afternoon to help advise, and also to show some basic post-production skills on the computer. Timelapse video of a 2010 session here.

  • We can take a maximum of 10 people on this session (running from 09.00 - 17.00) and places are charged at £150 per person.

Open Sessions: The studio doors are opened for a day giving you the chance to use it as you wish. We will allocate an hour to each person to get their own car into the studio and use all of the photography kit free of charge, to capture the shot(s) you want to get under your own steam. The hour is yours to do with as you wish, but we encourage you to stay for the day and shoot all eight of the cars that come along as a group. This session is for the more advanced amongst you as Pete will not be teaching at this session; he will only be on hand to manage the studio and offer assistance when needed.

  • We can accept eight guests at this event (09.00 - 17.00) charged at £150 per person.

Technical Sessions: New for this year, Pete will teach skills both inside and outside of the studio. We will use rigs and clamps to teach moving car photography outside, we'll use the computers for a walk-through of the more technical photoshop techniques, and we'll take the car into the studio to focus on interior shots. This session will require a reasonable amount of photography knowledge as it will be more fast-paced than our other sessions, but as we aim to teach a lot in one day the group size is reduced to just six people. This session will also run from 09.00 - 17.00 and includes lunch.

  • Six guests maximum, places are charged at £250 per person

If demand is there, we will consider running a beginner's session where Pete will talk through how to use the features and technology contained within the average DSLR camera.

Session dates:

  • 16th April: Studio Shooting
  • 7th May: Technical Session
  • 28th May: Open Session
  • 18th June: Technical Session
  • 9th July: Studio Shooting
  • 6th August: Open Session

All spaces will be offered on a first come, first served basis. For more information, or to reserve a space, please e-mail us at photography@pistonheads.com

Could easily be tempted by the technical session. Did a studio session around this time last year and it was fantastic, really worth the money.
