Third year warranty

I am about to change the wife's car and I note that a number of car warranties state the the first 2 years are provided by the manuafacture but the third year is a dealer warranty. How does this affect me when purchasing a used car around 18 months to 2 years old? When the car is into its third year will I have to take it back to the original supplying dealer for warranty work (they could be hundreds of miles away)?

I am not used to this as my last 2 cars have been Hondas that have a 3-year/90K miles Honda warranty that also provides 3-year break-down cover valid throught the EU - at least that was the Honda warranty in 2006 when I last purchased a car.

When buying a used car from a main dealer you can take the car to any dealer for warranty work.

I think this is an accounting exercise for the manufacturer more than anything else - shifts financial liability to the dealer network in year 3.
