anyone else ever pulled their own tooth out?
Discussion
had really bad tooth problems with a couple of molars on upper right mandible for ages, due to a wisdom tooth gradually crushing the crowns and shattering them, leaving just the roots in. after them getting infected, clearing, re-infecting over and over for years i finally had enough last night and dug one out with a nail file. got the other one out this afternoon. i feel five years younger, no more eye, head, sinus or neck pain. the second i dug them out it was all gone. i've got antibiotics for it but tbh the holes are already clearing and feel brilliant.
now, i know i'm a tool for doing my own dentistry due to being a bit of a chicken, but was just wondering if anyone else has done this?

That you didn't feel able to let one of my profession help you all this time

Just makes me sad you would need do that to yourself, I could have recommended a really ace guy in Harrogate. We're not scary

Crikey. Must have been painful during the procedure! How do you know the socket's now clean? If it closes over with anything nasty in there, you might be in trouble later. I always leave this kind of thing to the professionals.
was pretty bloody painful but was at the stage of needing to do it. gums are weird tho, the second i pulled each root out they started to stop bleeding straight away. i've slooshed with hot salt water and i'm on antibiotics. definitely got the whole roots out too. feel like the pressure of pain has been lifted completely.

Had an abscess once and after a day or two I had to seek help. I have no idea how bad your pain must have been if you left it for more than that.
has been bloody painful. i only realise what i've been putting up with for so long by the relative euphoria i've been feeling since i pulled them!Y282 said:

sure we could have found you a lovely dentist. Does pulling out a section of wisdom tooth with a small pair of long nose plyers count?
Had what felt like a piece of pop corn husk or something stuck at the back of my last molar for a while - top left if you're really interested. Didn't take long to become annoying and cause a little discomfort, couldn't get it with my finger properly, felt like there was something stuck there for sure, bit of a twinge when I caught it; so, crack out the fine nosed plyers (they were clean!), couple of goes and...
whoa... that tasted a bit funky, oh blood, quite a bit of blood - look at the plyers, ah, that'd be a piece of tooth then....!
After that, I can relate to the face/sinus/head ache OP is talking about - like someone tightening a ring around your head.
To the dentist a week later (yes, it had been a while...!) and 2 days after that, with a good dose of anaesthetic, he successfully removed the remaining parts of the tooth, thankfully still attached to the twisted root. Lovely, and the pain went away almost straight away.
Brings me onto my top tip - if you're still following
Mouth wash, nothing complex - I was advised to wash my mouth out with salted water after every meal/snack for a week to stop bits of food getting stuck in there and going bad; then back for a check up. Yes, did look a little odd toddling off to wash out my mouth after eating, but easy enough to do, water bottle, add a load of salt, job done... didn't taste that awful, somewhat better than rotting tooth tastes anyway. Healed up perfectly, never been a problem since.
...and yes, regular dental check-ups now, lesson learned

SWH that's interesting reading. you're spot on about the pain, permeats every part of you. i'd been putting up with it for a few years now so i still can't quite believe how much b etter it feels, like a health equivalent of a lottery win.
i had the wisdom tooth erupt feeling like a bit of popcorn thing too, but i left it and it gradually pushed forward along the mandible and crushed 3 teeth, one at a time through the pressure, leaving just the roots there. they'd all crossed over and buckled and were just under constant pressure.
i'm slooshing out religiously to be sure, but it all appears to be healing well so far!

I would suggest that it was decay that caused the teeth to fall apart. i had the wisdom tooth erupt feeling like a bit of popcorn thing too, but i left it and it gradually pushed forward along the mandible and crushed 3 teeth, one at a time through the pressure, leaving just the roots there. they'd all crossed over and buckled and were just under constant pressure.
