Wheel size differences!

Have a knackered set of 17" split rims (need refurb) on an e39 touring with 235/45/17s and am debating whether to fit 16" wheels with 225/55/16 tyres.....will I notice any ride or handling differences? Both sets of wheels need new tyres but the 16" wheels are in brilliant condition! The car is used for towing and I guess the new wheel/tyre combo will benefit that.
