Hi guys

We recently received a set of saucepans as a wedding gift (well multiple gifts), but they've turned out to be awful frown

We went on the advice of the John Lewis staff member and got these: http://www.johnlewis.com/30384/Range.aspx (3 saucepans, a big cooks pan thing, and a skillet).

ALthough nice to use (other than the fact the saucepan lids get incredibly hot) they've lasted only a few uses before the outer coating has just worn completely off the bottoms and the sides are starting to wear off. Hardly a long term purchase.

We'll take them back and hopefully JL will swap them for something else, but looking at the JL range I've no idea what would be a good purchase.

No need to be oven proof, we don't have induction at the moment, handles which don't heat up, and non-stick are all essentials. Plus obviously something of good quality that should last us years and years and years (unlike these).

This is a link to the range JL stock: http://www.johnlewis.com/Home+_26+Garden/Kitchen/P...

Can anybody recommend any of them?

Thanks!

I can recommend the Mauviel...! Bloody expensive though - I bought mine from the factory (approved) shop in Villedieu-les-Poeles on the way to Classic Le Mans in '08 - I justify the expense by saying that the saving I made by buying it there allowed me to take the missus and the car to Le Mans Classic for free, which is basically what the difference was.

Of those, take a look at the JL 3 ply vs the Le C 3 ply, they may be both by Le C.

I use the Le C and they are excellent, but boy they've gone up in price - worth looking around and seeing if you can get a price match from JLP. Here you go:

http://www.cookoo.co.uk/acatalog/Le_Creuset_3_Ply_...

Surprised the Anolons have deteriorated quite so quickly though.

Sticks.

These http://www.johnlewis.com/6676/Range.aspx come with a 25 year guarantee but are hand wash only. Handle and lid handle don't get hot, lid vent, ok for everyday use - though how they compare to 'professional' ones I couldn't say.

FWIW I didn't realise and dishwasher them. The one I use most faded in @ 2 years. But if you don't mind hand washing......

I don't know about the quality but http://www.viners.co.uk/ are giving 50% off at the moment.

When you get to the order page, type in NEWVINERSWEB50 to the voucher code space.

Some items are already on offer, you then get a discount for ordering online & then a further 50%.

It's worth a look. thumbup

Hi guys thanks for all the suggestions (keep 'em coming!)

Dishwasher proof is also essential - why do something by hand when there's a machine that can do the work ;-)

Also a similar price ideally - I thought they were decent pans (certainly a decent price we thought) - but yes it's shocking. Supposed to last years and years, not just a few months frown

Having done a bit of research I've binned the idea of nonstick.. JL have their own range of 3Ply, and Le Creuset do too - thinking of using those....

FWIW this is how this rugged, hardwaring, dishwasher safe set of pans look after approx 6 months of light use (we probably cook 2-3 times/week and obviously don't use all the pans at the same time!)

Light scratching just from being in the cupboard:

The covering on the base is just disappearing, leaving a lumpy and rough surface behind:

ANd the exterior coating is just disappearing off the sides of the pans:

are those anolons the raymond blanc version? thats terrible. life time guarantee mind.

i got the circulon infinite 16 18 and 20 cm pans. with 20cm skillet and 26cm deep chefs pan. £165 delivered from harts, but i know JL will price match.

mine are perfect, and as they have the 3ply base, the non stick doesn't come into contact with anything. they simply wipe clean.

my housemate however has a few circulon elite pans which i bet are very similar to your anolons. being under the meyer umberella. tyes the bottoms are taking a knock due to being single skinned. the 24cm fry pan is even worse. the handle is too heavy and without two large chicken breasts inside it just topples over. really safe with hot fat in there!

the nonne stick on the infinates is top class. they rarely go in the sink, just wiped with a damp cloth

heya, yes that's the puppies. It put us off the pans you have, simply because they're teh same company overall....

they also have the same problem as your flatmats (at least the small saucepan does) where it just topples over if you aren't careful frown

How long have you had yours (might put them back on the list if it sounds like they've lasted well.....)

We have a set of Le Creuset stainless pans, highly recommended.

We use them on a induction hob which one of the kids (teenage) managed to leave an empty week old pan on till it turned blue, was not happy to say the least, but 10 minutes with a tube of autosol and the pan looked like new again.

Don't know where abouts you are but we brought ours from a Le Creuset store at Clarkes village in Somerset, quite happy to do a deal (about 20% off the already below list price) for a collection of 6 pans.

Edited to add : the handles despite being steel remain cool no mater how hot the pan (no idea how) although when put in the oven they become far hotter then the pan.

I have Marco Pierre White (i.e. Beka) pans. Apart from the non-stick coating on the frying pan, which didn't seem to survive the wife, the rest (SS) seem very well made and survive hob, oven, and dishwasher fine.

hth.

Good choice IMHO. I have an early set of Circulon that are starting to show their age now, mainly because they weren't designed to be put in the dishwasher. All of the newer ranges are dishwasher proof now, the Infinite range is ovenproof to 240deg and has a lifetime guarantee. Clearly there have been some manufacturing improvements since I bought mine, my guarantee was subject to them being handwashed and treated with some anodising 'stuff' every few weeks. I ignored all of that advice, they've survived but lost lots of colour on the exterior and the skillet is just starting to look a little too well worn for my liking. Still worth every penny I paid for them though, they've had a hard life!

If you can get JL to price match, Amazon have all of the Circulon range at half price this week. If you're interested, the roasting tins and bakeware are equally good. thumbup

the bottoms of the elites are a almost separate encapsulated thick stainless base. no non stick coating to scratch off.

only had them 3 months, but they are as new. i use them on gas, and never need more than the small burner as they spread the heat so well. i use them all daily and im over the moon. thay as stated above are also oven friendly. i dont have a dishwasher though.

off to amazon for a 30cm skillet......

I use Le Creuset 3-Ply. They're pretty good, I've never been a fan of their cast iron stuff despite having a full set but their stainless pan range is really good. Just bought their casserole dish too which I've just used for the first time to recreate Heston Blumenthal's supposedly perfect spag bol. Seems great. smile

Cool thank you smile

I don't think those Elite pans are in JL but hoping to go in a couple of days to try and sort it all out so will have a good look then. Let's hope they aren't funny about returning them all :s

Just bought the Techtonic 24" pan and a multicooker! £30 for 80-something worth of pans. Result.

Just looks like a dodgy set to me. I've had the same ones for years and they have been superb.

I've a full set of John Lewis stainless steel saucepans which have been brilliant. Come up well in the dishwasher and handles don't get too hot to touch. These are the ones:

http://www.johnlewis.com/63867/Range.aspx

I've even accidently burnt one dry when using a steamer and it cleaned up back to what it was.
