I really like the idea of a summer road trip with my family, but there's slim chance I could afford the time off work so this is all pie in the sky stuff.

What car would you choose to cover an 8000 mile road trip across western Europe with the Mrs and two kids. Digs to include B&B's, hotels and some camping so gear needs to be carried with.

Um, to keep it amusing let's choose two cars;

1) A real world car. With a budget of £20,000 (purchase cost) and reliablity and MPG the big decisions makers.
2) A balls out, you've just won the Euro-millions, cost no option choice.

Please include working out...

1) E61 BMW 530d Touring
2) FFRR TDV8

Working not included, hopefully it`s self explanatory.

Euro millions option the new ferrari FF thingy.

My cheapy would be a Volkswagen Phaeton 6.0 W12 4MOTION pick one up second hand in budget as long as fuel consumption is not an issue it will eat the miles.

Real world

1.some boring VAG group diesel estate with the old 1.9tdi lump. Skoda Octavia L&K or Superb springs to mind. Nobody will look twice at it and you won't care about parking it in some dodgy budget hotel's car park. It will also have been remapped so over 160bhp and enough toys to keep you comfortable.

Fantasy land

997 Turbo- comfortable and quick and still nobody will look twice at it........

Really? A diesel 4x4 for a European road trip. I'm sure it would be great for the motorway slogs but what about the alpine passes and coast roads?

Realistic, probably an alfa 156 GTA with some money for spares hehe , or if the extra space wasn't needed for people/luggage a used caymen/boxster maybe

Euro millions, if space needed a Maserati quattroporte, if it wasn't a 458.

I was looking at it from the `wife, two kids and camping gear` perspective. Thinking about it now I still think it`d be ideal.
