Hi all,

Bit of a strange one this.
Driving into work this morning got stuck behind a slow mover on the country roads, spotted a nice straight bit and knocked the box into "Sport" and floored it (I may actually have already had my foot down when I knocked over into sport) only to find virtually no power. It actually felt like the Turbo had died. The car drove fine to work but still with that loss of power.
Called my local independent BMW garage and went down to see them at lunch time. They stuck it on the diagnostics and said that everything was showing fine with the Turbo but that there were a couple of faults showing for the Particle Filter and Glow plugs. We agreed that the best option was to reset these and see how the car drove.

So I left the garage and the power was definitely back. Drove back the same route I'd done this morning and thought I'd drop it into "Sport" and see how it went (made sure this time I wasn't on the throttle when I knocked it over as mechanic had said this might cause issues). Exactly the same thing happened. Lack of power and not the usual wave of torquey goodness.

Have read a bit online and it would seem that the car has dropped into "limp mode" as a safety precaution.

The question is what the hell is going on? Gearbox seems fine as it will go through all 6 gears and reverse without any hassle and will do this manually in sport mode.

It's booked in next Wednesday to be looked at but I'd like to go prepared with some ideas.

Any suggestions would be massively appreciated.

Cheers
Heeed

hi mate,
sounds like the dreaded DPF to me (diesel particulate filter). removal is the better option rather than replacement, this will not only get rid of your problematic DPF but there will never be anymore issues again due to the unit in the exhaust being removed and the software from the ECU deleted.

Thanks for this.
Am pleased to say my local independent picked this up and have sorted it out. There was indeed an issue with the DPF however they resolved this by cleaning it out. However, this wasn't the only problem. There was an issue with the Fuel Filter which has also been dealt with by replacing it.
Picked the car up this morning and (touch wood) it all seems to be OK.

Good to know that the DPF can be bypassed (as with a CAT on petrol) might have to look into this when it goes in for a service in a couple of months time.

Thanks again.
Cheers
