Avoiding the tolls

Hi Chaps,

A: what's the best route to take if avoiding the tolls from Dunkirk?
B: how much longer and further is it?


My satnav will take me avoiding the tolls but the maps are a little out of date, just wondered if anyone knows a decent route.

It is hard to avoid the tolls on the way down to Rouen, but it is only a small stretch that is toll so not that expensive, once at Rouen use the old N138, it is toll free, less mileage than the motorway and the driving is a billion times more interesting.

Set your Tom Tom to cycle route.
Did it by mistake a couple of years ago while towing a 25ft caravan.
Believe it or not, it was OK, got some strange looks from locals in the smaller towns, but avoided the Tolls and found some good places to stop.
Only took 3 hours to get to Caen, so not that slow either.

Was in France last week and had satnav set as normal and ended up driving down a cycle path through a country park to the annoyance of 3 generations of a family and their dogs coming towards us! They were quick to point out that the local police wouldn't have been too happy either!

We did some brilliant back roads 2 years ago which rook us off the autoroute from before Rouen and I think I still have the itn files if you want to have a look.

Only issue was the pigging little ferry boat we didn't want to wait for to cross a large river (name escapes me right now).
