Keith,

who would dare steal a car from you?

Anyways, think, you could retrun to the car, to find ladies queing up, or perchance, inside awaiting you.....

I've had to reboot my key a few times in the past. Sounds like the problem - I think you turn on the ignition, then off, hold down one of the buttons on the key for about 3-5 seconds till you hear a click, take the key out of the ignition and try the lock / unlock as normal. Pretty sure that is what I did and it worked fine.

This will more than likely be your PSE pump situated in the boot. This pump controls the pnumatatics that operate the door locks etc. They cost a wooing £800 though and then you have to fit it and have it re coded.

Easy to replace, but not cheap

I had to recode the key to the car by placing the key in the ignition at the 2nd turn, then hold the unlock button for a couple of seconds If i remember correctly. It's definitiely in the user manual if you have it at hand. Hope thats the solution, as its an easy fix.

Try re-synching the key before spending money at the garage:

Open door manually. Press unlock. Key in ignition. Turn to light up dashboard. Turn off, take key out. Press unlock.

Maybe, even so, I know some really old Mercs used pneumatics back in the '60s but nothing within the last 30 years surely?

Just googled and it seems I was wrong, Mercedes are or were until fairly recently using vacum operated locks, wierd!
