Hi chaps..Im having some deliberations surrounding the fuel pressure regulator as this could be causing my starting issues only i wont know for sure untill the injectors have been for ultrasonic cleaning..
If it is the problem causer are there any other type of regulators that will fit as ones for mine are quite rare now and most are secondhand.. The same applies to the accumulator..Can the car be run without the accumulator?
I dont think they can be overhauled unless someone knows of someone?..Can anyone point me in the right direction please..Cheers..Ziga

Mark,
Do you mean the Fuel distributer (also called metering unit)
I'm sure you do.
The fuel pressure regulator is just a taper screw with a couple of thin shims.
I suggest you put a bottle of Techron in a full tank.
Run til 1/4 tank, then repeat.
I'm sure it is possible to get a fuel distributer overhauled in UK as they were used on the 1973 and up 911s (the 2.7 not thr RSRs).
Can it run without an accumaltor?.... Yes, but the way the car was designed was to not start the fuel pump pumping til the coil saw some "action". Hence the need for an accumalator to hold pressure. If your fuel pump is on the "key" as I suspect it is. Then you will get fuel pressure on ignition and tyou should have sufficient fuel pressure for starting.
Did you frig with the idle mixture (tell the truth
) That's the sunken adjuster on top of the fuel dist. Maybe we can give that a tweek. Once I know when/how you pump opreates.
FYI a fuel accumalator is around $120 in the US. Pelican Parts.
A fuel dist is $400 overhauled or $2,000 + for an OEM (Bosche)
I didn't check Marshal or Team Blitz prices.
A fuel Accumalator is basically a one way valve, I'm sure somebody UK based should be able to suggest an alternative much cheaper.

Hi Jeff..
No i havent messed with the mixture but it could be time to have it checked as i have done a few miles since it was done..I do have a spare metering unit which came off the car when it was in the ford garage..so there is a possibility that i could have it refurbed..Im having the injectors out next week and sending them off for ultrasonic cleaning..Which might cure the problem..My pump is still on the relay and not on the key as it didnt make a blind bit of difference..will have a look for the accumulator at pelican parts..Cheers..Mark

I bet you a quid you don't see any improvement once the injectors have been ultrasonically 'cleaned'. We use a UT cleaning tank at work and the sort of deposits that it removes tend to not be the sort that you find on injectors (resinous varnish).
It's possible to test the injectors yourself with a bit of ingenuity; just unplug them from the inlet manifold, point into a graduated jar, energise the fuel pump and lift the airflow meter flap (as that's all the car does anyway). You should see a nice even fan of fuel (like a cone, ideally) and each injector should flow as near as dammit the same amount of fuel in a given time period as all the others.
If the fuel pattern is crap, fuel rate low OR you find any that 'dribble' when you turn the pump off, just target those.
As Jeff says, a bottle of injector cleaner is as likely - if not more so - to clear out any crap as ineffectual UT.

Thanks wedg1e..When the ford guy tested them he said there was a couple that dribbled fuel and he gave them a squirt with an air hose..I have used redex injector cleaner but it is probably poo and if you are saying that having them ultrasonically cleaned will yeild no benefit then i will not bother having it done..The product that has been suggested (Techron) looks good and has a good write up but will it remove any tiny particles of rust that have maybe become lodged in the injectors,Or is it not possible for that to happen and its just a case of them being severly gummed up..What other areas should i look at as to rectify the poor starting and chugging at low idle and revs issue?
Even if i have the fuel pump on the key i still have to pump the throttle and i know all thats doing is allowing more air to be mixed with the fuel, So would it be a mixture thing? a friend travelling behind me the other day said he could smell petrol...
The metering head that the ford place put on was one off of a capri that he had sitting about..Maybe its worth getting my old one refurbed as apparently there was some rust evident in there but even when it was running real bad it started easier.
Pray tell o wedge master,what to do..what to do..Please..Ziga

Mark,
I think Ian may be able to assist you in finding one of these.
There are some fuel system cleaning machines, they use slovents similar to Techron.
Some mech shops have them. They hook up (intercept) into the fuel supply and clean EVERYTHING.
The machines are quite expensive so the service is not cheap, it also takes an hour plus 15 min set up.....but they are good.
I did three cars when a friend bought his. On two cars there was a marked difference, the other one not so much, but my cars usually run at 100%.
Well sort of
This will be much more cost efficent than pulling the injectors and getting them cleaned. (less work too)
The machines come with a gazillion fittings so no prob connecting up to a CIS.
I can't remember the make of my friends one, but I think Sun do one.

When I said the fuel system cleaning wasn't cheap......
I had three cars done, I'm sure I didn't pay $150 per car.
$450.....I would have remembered that....I'm a tight XXXXXX
With regard to ultrasonic cleaners, I have one, they are not magic.
I would weigh up the cost of a new set of injectors, esp as the Capri guy said a couple were dripping (why did he put them back?)
I don't suppose he told which ones they were...(cylinder #s) you could possibly get a couple of servicable ones from somebody on the forum, and go from there. A crappy spray pattern is better than dripping

Thanks mate..The trouble is they dont make the injectors anymore so finding a new set is impossible plus if i did they would be very expensive..Im going to have them cleaned regardless and then try to get the spare metering head and WUR serviced or overhauled and that should be it.I had another fuel filter fitted earlier just in case but the old one didnt show signs of being blocked..I might need a rolling road and a tech who can adjust the pressure regulator as it might need adjusting..I might get all this done..spend a small fortune and it still does the same ole creap..but you never know..at least i can rule certain things out of the equasion if they are working properly...Cheers..Zig

Thanks jeff..Might be worth a look into..The ultrasonic cleaning was £100..Cheers..Ziga
£100 seems a bit dear for 6,These two companies on ebay are both cheaper

Cheers guys..Im taking a gamble and postponing the cleaning of the injectors and have booked it in to sanspeed for a rolling road tune..They are bosch technicians and it will cost £140 for a rolling road tune, They can adjust the regulator also..At least this way i will know what is going on with my injection system..Hopefully this will sort the problem out..If they turn around and say nothing wrong here it must be your injectors then im gonna kick myself in the head..Then headbutt the nearest wall..
