if you are in a private occupational pension (non government) and your employer decides you have to increase your pension contributions to keep the same level of commitment from them is this allowed?

Yes. Have a look at the eaendment power in the trust deed and rules that govern the pension plan and you'll see that the employer can amend future benefits and contributions in any way. If you're unhappy, you probably can decide to cease being a member, but this is generaly not a good option financially.
