Some may remember I thought I'd economise when replacing my old worn shocks by using a set of ex-993RS items:

http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=94972&f=48&h=0&hw=bilstein+eibach

This proved to be a saga of epic proportions, but at long last I have the car back from AmD, where Andy Fearn has put in a heroic effort to upgrade my (somewhat unusual it turns out) 964C2's suspension from it's thoroughly sh4gg3d Boges (over 120k miles) and Fulger aftermarket springs (anyone ever hear of these?).

After much general faffing, playing around with 993RS kit and problems with wrong parts supply from Bilstein we eventually managed to get the correct HD 'Yellows' to fit (rear mounts proved problematic as this is a _very_ early 964).

Matched to this is a new (and more expensive than I'd budgeted for) set of Eibach progressives. Andy has set up the car with AmD's laser 4-wheel alignment kit with a fast-road/occasional trackday bias - I'll post the settings if anyone is interested.

Just about every bush in the suspension has been replaced it seems, but then at 15 years and >120k miles that's no great surprise, except perhaps to my poor wallet!

Result: The handling of the car is totally transformed! The previous 'nervousness' has been eliminated - which was good news as when we had that mad bout of snow in London earlier this year as that translated to a several disconcerting moments of 70mph opposite lock merging from the M4 onto the M25...

Any tendancy to tramline at speed has now almost completely disappeared, high speed stability is of "hewn from a chocolate megalith" proportions and the M25E -> M11S 'corkscrew' is now faster and more reassuring than before with none of the sudden eye-widening 'sproiinngg' that happened before in the rapid R->L direction change.

All in all: one very happy (and poor) customer!

Kevin,

I'll be interested to hear what you find out at Leda - I'm looking for new suspension, and their prices seem reasonable, especially considering they're 24-way adjustables. Pzull over on Rennlist seems to like his!

Cheers

I spotted the Leda post on the Rennlist 964 forum too - after I'd already bought the Bilsteins

However, I console myself with the facts that I'm not really at a level of experience where adjustables make sense yet, and Bilstein will revalve my shocks to custom specs for 50 quid a corner

I'm looking forward to hearing about peoples experiences with the Ledas, and am also looking forward to testing out the new suspension on track, probably Bruntingthorpe or North Weald...

Hi Ian,

Rennlist is where I got the idea from, I've spoken with Beverly at LEDA, prices are well, mail me if you want details..not the cheapest, but not the highest by any margin...Friday the 14th I'll be there. Braintree in Essex is where they are based.

Hi, this may not be relavent to the 964 but a friend of mine recently installed the 24 point adjustable coil over Ledas to a 944 Turbo. One thing to watch is that it took Leda over 4 months to manufacture the things, so it may be worth asking them what their lead time or stock level is for 964?

The suspension itself seems top notch. We had a play with the shocks set at level 4 (1 being full soft) and the car felt planted yet smooth to drive and soaked up normal roods with ease. We then set it to 20 and OMG was that stiff. Roll, lift and dive were reatly reduced, but on poor surfaces the ride was incredibly harsh and we discovered new rattles and creaks that the car did not have before. The point I'm trying to make is that the adjustability was very noticeable and did affect the handling, it was not just for show or 'brag factor'
