Will I speed up a plate transfer by going to local DVLA?

There's a DVLA office local(ish) to me. I want to transfer a number plate to my new car as quickly as I can so I can get on with selling the old one.

I've got all the paperwork completed, so am I likely to speed things up by taking it all to the local office, or will they just put it in the post to Swansea anyway in which case I might as well simply do that myself?

Just trying to get a push on with this, welcome any advice.

From a retention cert, I've done it the same day.

Transfers between cars did take longer though.

Done it three times with my cars at the DVLA office just a few miles south of Worcester. can be busy but, on arrival take a queue ticket and wait your turn. Usually in and out within an hour, sometimes much less.

Thanks chaps. So did they issue the new tax discs etc whilst you waited, or did they come through the post at a later date?

The local DVLA office will take the paperwork, give you a letter allowing you to get plates made and your new tax discs, they will then key in the plate transfer onto the computer system run from Swansea, Swansea will then print out V5 docs / retention certs and send them to you.

As you have to send your docs to the local office, you may save the day or two that it takes your docs to get there in the post.

Ah fantastic! So in theory I could change the plates on the car tomorrow and then I just have to wait for the paperwork?

Done this exact same thing 2 weeks ago, came out of my local office with a photo copied piece of paper as a receipt and that was all, Both cars in wifes name so easy transfer or so i thought, had to wait 10 days to get old mot for donor car, and new tax discs for both. Both v5's turned up 3 days later, so nearly 2 weeks in total

DVLA Worcester ~ New tax disc showing new Reg, new MoT showing new reg and other doicuments... whilst you wait. I had some plates made up the following day, fitted them and away I went.

Unlike some of my less efficient experiences with DVLA staff Swansea, the folks at Worcester were friendly, helpful and efficient. Which makes a refreshing change with so many miseries about now in the former green and pleasant ...

Not tried it for a transfer yet, but when I got my plate I went to the DVLA office in Leeds, they sorted the tax and MOT at the time, gave me some sort of receipt - I had to physically change the plate within 48 hours and then waited for the registration document through the post.

Hmmm... sounds like it could go either way then! Oh well, I'll bang them in and hope for the best.

Could really do without another fortnight's delay though. Fingers crossed.
