I am falling in love!
Discussion
Big dilemma.. I have this 4.2 whilst my 4.5 is being prepared but i think i am falling in love with the 4.2
It drives so much better than my 4.5 although i hope once raceproved do the work on the 4.5 will it drive as well. the 4.2 just seems to rev so freely i dont notice any lumpiness like in the 4.5.
i have discovered that the reason the 4.2 is so loud is because the previous owner spent alot of money on act exhaust products and other upgrades. i am beginning to think the 4.2 is the better car .
What do you think is the 4.2 a better standard car.

What i dont understand why couldnt they have made a 4.5 and just kept the same chracteristics as the 4.2. I also looked under my car and noticed that the rear bumper has been seperated to accommadate these massive ACT Exhaust. Does any one else have this option and what does it normaly cost.. Will post some pictures this weekend.
I am sure that Raceproved can liven up the 4.5 with a remap, exhaust, decat etc.
You could consider going even further eg lightened fly wheel, different gear ratios, different diff, 4.2 induction (modified) and heads reworked.
I have all of the above except the 4.2 induction (plus its a red rose) and I cant fault the car albeit I havent compared it to a 4.2 on the road.
Think I am at 436bhp but with a fuller remap (mine has minor fuelling mods) and some induction mods I could break the 450bhp I am sure - but tbh the car drives so well now I am not sure I want to play anymore with it , for now.
The factory reckoned the last of the 4.2s were the best of the Cerbs AFAIK.
Your other option is to drop the 4.2 into your 4.5 ! But on the way get it modified to a 4.8 by Raceproved. :-)

I've had both, and really there is very little to choose between them. The 4.2 has a freer revving engine, and has a nice Vtec like powerband at 3k revs (at least the clatter cam ones do).
Because most of us have spent out motoring lives in the normal world where a 2.0 'Golf' is better than a 1.6, that brainwashing stays with us, so we believe the 4.5 is the 'Daddy'.
The later 4.2's were probably 4.5's anyway, both are great cars, and any potential newcomers to Cerb ownership should just buy on condition, not engine size. So your 4.2 may easily be the better car out of the 2, if it is Keep it.
Not sure about what you mean by a split rear bumper, that sounds vandalisation to me, post some pictures up.

i think one of the things i love with the car is how solid it feels. There is no squeaks or rattling just silence from underneath the car. I saw it the reciepts some high bills for bush and droplink work.
What do i ask Raceproved to do to make my 4.5 as solid
I just had all of my underneath reworked to get rid of all squeaks - did cost me a fair old whack to have tons of bushes, drop links, new springs, ARB, dampers refurbed etc etcWhat do i ask Raceproved to do to make my 4.5 as solid
work included:-
Dampers (new oil, rods, bearings, divider piston etc)
New springs
Lower diff bushes
Drop links
ARB
Corner weighting
Plus other bushes etc.... etc...

I pretty much did all of the above during Dec/Jan and it has made a diffrence, it's pretty much rattle free at the moment and is a much better drive than before.work included:-

Its quite funny because autocar said when they tested both 4.2 & 4.5 that the 4.2 was the much better car it was quicker & revs better lower down the range.
Which confused me because i bought a 4.5 thinking it would be quicker! but they both officially produce the same bhp.
Suppose the fact is they are both great cars, but i think the 4.5 has a better tuning potential.
I have only drove the 4.5 & speed 6 cerb so would be nice to compare the 4.2 with the 4.5.
Must be one of the few times when a smaller engine is quicker than a larger capacity one, admitting not much difference in 300cc.
At least OP got to compare the two.

I've got a 2002 "4.2" that goes like stink! I've had it two years now, and Joo and RaceProved have worked their magic on it. It now puts out 393bhp on the RaceProved (ex-TCS Joo dyno) dyno (tested at their open day May last year), and had one run at 399bhp at TCS when the map was initially done (late in the day when the temperature was lower - see below) although the run at 394bhp was probably more representative.
Our thinking is that is could be a 4.5 block with the 4.2 induction, which were sold as the 4.2's in the later years of the Cerb. It's got new cats and a sports back box; re-map by Joo; some very mild intake port flow matching and throttle pot balanced; lightweight RaceProved flywheel (which I think helps it rev even freer).
It starts to pick up at 3k, then really comes on-cam at 4k and howls round to the "beeeeep" with a really strong pull. The remap means that it is extremely well behaved at low revs (we spent a lot of time on little or no throttle openings as this is what dictates it's behaviour in heavy traffic), and there are absolutely no holes or dips in the way that it pulls through all the revs.
It's had a new wishbone at front, and has ProTech adjustable shocks which are OK for the road.

Anymore info emerged on this yet? Us underpowered 4.2ers are waiting expectantly!
I dont know anything except that RP are looking to offer this in the near future (I think!). Seems like it will be a stonkingly powerful engine and wont require that much work from a standard 4.2 afaik.

Tell me, have you got a flat spot in your rev-range at about 2,400 ?
I have and it is often at this point that I blip the throttle to change down. The engine just balks and it is very disconcerting. Do you have anything like this effect ?
Thanks,
Paul
