As much as we wish our friends and brothers in Japan the speediest of recoveries, this story may irk you a bit. Not at the disaster-stricken island nation, but at the inaction of your own local municipalities. Take a look at the picture above and have a guess at where it was shot; a scenic byway in upstate New York? Nah, son. This is Japan. The Great Kanto Highway in Naka, to be specific.
A 150-meter section of the roadway was demolished by the quake. Not broken, but demolished to a point where the chasms created could swallow cars whole. Yet Japan's road repair team, NEXCO, wasted no time springing into action. On March 17th, the crew got to work on cleaning up the mess. SIx days later, they were done. Check the before and after shot. Then ask your town why it takes over three months to repair a pothole.
Stay up Japan! In this respect, we're happy you make us look bad
