What are the the specific differences between the M3/Z4M and the CSL?
I know the CSL has a different intake system, but what else is there? There's about 20bhp between them and i would have thought no more than half of that could come from an airbox
The M3 uses a different exhaust system from the Z4M/CSL, which share the same primary headers... The CSL uses sharper cams and someone mentioned higher compression pistons, but I have never bothered to compare part numbers. Lastly, the CSL also has freer flowing cats and a more aggressive Alpha N based mapI know the CSL has a different intake system, but what else is there? ENGINE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NORMAL M3 AND M3 CSL
ENGINE & GEARBOX-360bhp @ 7900rpm, 370nm 273lb-ft @ 4900rpm
-Thinner exhaust walls
-Carbon fibre air collector & air intake with modified air flow,
-Camshafts with longer valve opening periods,
-Optimised exhaust valves,
-Modified exhaust manifold,
-Funnel shaped pipes leading into the air silencer,
-Modified transmission & final drive ratio’s,

I've been considering one of those - i take it there is no need to mess with the ecu etc?
I didn't (yet) and you don't have to as the ECU adapts to the airflow. To be honest I think performance gains are very doubtful, it's just for the induction noise. Some people have had a remap after fitting the intake plus an after-market exhaust (over on the Z4 forum) so it could be worth investigating...clabcon said:

The head and pistons are the same on both.
Power wise, the CSL has 200 cel cats as opposed to 400 cel. Along with Alpa N mapping and carbon airbox, Better cams and larger intake valves.
All this adds up to a 17bhp power increase over the standard M3

17PS increase from 343PS to 360PS.
Slightly less in BHP.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that CSLs don't make their stated power on the rollers, however.
