Now being about 1000 miles into Porsche ownership, it has become apparant that I have a problem with the cars gearbox or related parts. The car is a '91 S2 and has covered 85k miles.

The problem is when selecting 2nd gear on a down change the lever will shake and sometimes so violently that the whole car shakes and you can hear loud knocking from either the spare wheel, compressor or the suspension. The problem is intermittant and despite efforts to conclude the exact circumastances it happens, it seems to be completely random. It happens under extreme engine braking and also around town, although the higher the revs, the more violent the shaking. The only thing that stops it is to heel & toe to match the revs with the gear.

Firstly, is any one able to offer any suggestions of what it could be and also can anyone recommend a good Porsche specialist in Kent (Tonbridge area but will travel outside Kent if needs be).

Many thanks

Simon

Your car needs a new clutch.

The clutch was replaced about 2 years ago at a Porsche Specialist and only done 4k miles since. What makes you say its the clutch? Surely it wouldn't just be limited to 2nd gear if it was?

Won't all cars exhibit these tendancies if you change down without matching the revs, causing heavy engine braking? The S2 with its big 4 cylinder engine will be particularly sensitive to this - and if the clutch is on it's way out, may well be the weak link causing what you describe.

Mine did the same until I got the clutch replaced.
It will gradually happen when downchanging from 3rd to 2nd, then from 4th to 3rd then from 5th to 4th. When it starts doing it from 5th to 4th it means the friction disc is completely worn out.

Mine does exactly the same as this, down to second at high revs under engine braking and the whole drive train shakes - no great help for you but solidarity brother, this is 1800 miles into ownership?!

It's happened 3 times but not for a week or so now, keeping fingers crossed it's fixed itself...

My car had done 3k miles in the last 3 years so I'm hoping a few miles sorts it out, helluva shock when it happened first time though!

Assuming this is not a case of "operator error" I'd say it was the clutch. If it was internal to the gearbox, it would have probably exploded by now.

In the event you have a clutch rebuild, I'd suggest you also install a "proper" fluid in that slushbox, and I'd recommed Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 or equivalent if you can find it. Mobil 1 doesn't make an equivalent product. What you describe actually could be a limited slip differential acting up with the wrong fluid, but it sure sounds like a bad clutch job or cheap clutch install.

regards, DS

My S2 exhibited the exact same symtoms until replacing the clutch resolved it completely.
