5,4,3,2,1 .....

Just counting down to see how long before this post disappears into some obscure corner of PH.

Anyway, not much fuss being made about the launch of this today.

Guaranteed to be this years' Xmas must have.

If it's any good I may even get one for the inevitable sport & porn games that will be available eventually.

Anyone know how it works?

I tried one a couple of weeks ago. Couldn't get along with it - when the 3d effect was turned up to maximum, it felt horrible. I ended up turning it right down so that there was only a slight 3d effect...which kind of defeats the object of it. Ridge Racer was fun though - ridiculous potential for drifts!

I looked at the release titles at sainsburys the other night and there doesn't seem to be anything exciting, maybe pilot wings.

How does it compare to the PSP version of RR2 though? Always thought that was one hugely enjoyable game, perfectly suited to the PSP.

Never played the PSP version I'm afraid. This version was a lot of fun though - not exactly Forza/GT in its realism, but a lot of fun for a hand held device. Though I did concentrate my efforts on holding ridiculous powerslides, as opposed to actually winning the race!

I would have preferred f-zero or starfox.

Had a look at one today. The 3D is the most effective I've seen, and the augmented reality is fantastic.

Loved Pilot Wings and really hoped it would turn up on the Wii. Was not interested in the 3DS but if it has Pilot Wings it may change my mind.

Ahhh 'puters and gadgets, not computer games.

For some reason I'm quite excited about this 3D without glasses idea.

Could be my next toy.

If I get one before my kids they'll not be too happy!

New Ebay search added.

I picked mine up on Friday morning from HMV Canary Wharf (I pre-ordered, but there was no queue, plenty in stock).

I went a bit mad with games and got:

Super Streetfighter IV
Pilotwings Resort
Nintendogs + Cats
Splinter Cell
Ridge Racer
Super Monkey Ball
PES 2011

The 3D is really effective, but the "sweet spot" is quite narrow, so you can lose it sometimes, especially in a tense game. In particular, games which use the accelerometer suffer, as the actual act of moving the console around makes it difficult to stay in the 3D sweet spot.

Does the 3D effect work in the same way as those pictures of the 70s and early 80s?
You know, the ones of flowers and tigers that had that odd ridged plastic over the top that made a 'zzzzzzzzzzzp' noise when you rubbed your finger nail over them?

It's the same principle, but the implementation is slightly different. The 3DS uses a "parallax barrier" to split the display into two images that are only visible from slightly different angles (left eye and right eye).

The old 3D picture cards use a lenticular lens to display two or more images at different angles.

Thus with the old 3D picture cards, you get the effect of being able to "look around" the image, as there can be multiple angles in the picture. The 3DS only creates two images, so you get a 3D effect similar to a 3D film, but without the glasses. If you move your head too much, the 3D effect is destroyed.
