In the days of SU carbs I thought carburettors were fairly straightforward: squirt petrol into an airstream in reasonably predictable quantities, pop as much as you want into the cylinders by opening up a little flap, and set fire to it. I fixed one in a morris pickup with a bit of chewing gum wrapper when the needle fell off.

Now I'm trying to fix a Solex Peeburger and I've realised that I was wrong. What happens is a bunch of pixies hang out in all the little pipes and runs and holes and meshes, and only if you feed them the right prayers do they do they do the mixy thing. Most of the time they're drunk on petrol fumes and fighting each other, and their results unpredictable, the mix changing from second to second. The best way to beat them back into submission is to stamp on the accelerator pedal a lot, as this thumps the big ones with a big hammer. But they soon forget and go back to their feuds.

SU carbs are reasonably straightforward because the design of them was good from the start. Other makes had somewhat flawed designs for day-to-day driving and had to make do with complicated mechanisms to make them drivable.

You'll be pleased to know there is an easy fix for the Peeburger. The MKI which you obviously have, uses the pixies. The MkII switched to elves. Just give it a good spray with some carb cleaner to shift the pixies and install the elf upgrade. Job done. Just make sure you've shifted all the pixies cos you don't want to mix the elves and pixies, oh no.

Oh and don't use petrol from National stations as the Smurfs aren't compatible.
