Which 9-10k hatch?

Renault megane F1 R26 (epic cars, but will be hated on here for being french probably)
MK5 Golf GTI
Corsa VXR
mk1 Cooper S
mk1 Cooper S JCW

As an overall experience so handling, power, fuel economy, reliability etc.

Which and why.

In this price bracket, I'd be looking at an Astra VXR over a Corsa VXR.

The latest Cupra R is a good one too, 265bhp (10 less than most Mk2 Focus RS's seem to make on a dyno...) and supposed to be a pretty good driver too. Could well be off your radar, the Cupra R pair often seem to get overlooked when people are shopping for super hatches.

Handling, quality, noise and performance will be better than those in your shortlist. Economy will be at least as good.

60k and under for me due to the miles I do.

Cupra R's are way out of the price range and I don't like Astra VXR's, my mate has 1 and I work at airbus, they had them on offer through a works deal a few years ago so every man and his dog has one at airbus now.

Don't be so silly ! They're fantastic cars, very good to drive with plenty of tuning scope. The LSD is awesome when you push it hard enough to feel it work.

Mini JCW are awesome but not in the same league as the Megane or MK1 Focus RS.

BTW - the R53 JCW had very little real world difference to the regular CS. Bigger brakes, sports suspension and seats were all options still. And they also lied (rigged the test) to produce the HP figures.

If a JCW costs no more to buy then fine, just don't pay over the odds for one.

Personally I think I'd be looking at a DC5 ITR (well actually a DC2 as they look and sound better but are evidently older), if I was looking at an economical fwd hatch.


Oh BTW - the R53 MINI's like a drink. Think 26-28mpg normally and highs of 32mpg. So at this level of fuel consumption it potentially opens up the options to V8's and the like in terms of pence per mile fuel costs.

First up would be te quaiffe ATB LSD

I doubt you will find anything as well specced, as new, as quick as cheap as the mazda 3 mps, if you haven't drove one go try one out

no offence OP, but for that amount of money, those are odd choices.

the list just says to me 'blandness'. personally wouldn't spend 9k on a hot-hatch.

if you really have to stick to that list, then what do you want out of the car?

I want a car that:

can do 250 miles a week
be comfortable whilst being good fun
not costing the earth to run (i'm happy filling up once a week with what I have now which is a 45l tank)
not too old
not unreliable
pretty fast (less than 7 to 60 is what I call fast, yes yes, 0-60 is a stupid measurement but its a good indication of a cars potential performance overall imo)
reasonably equipped
can carry my girlfriend, suitcases, a dog etc (so no roadsters sadly.)

The 130 BMW's look pretty thirsty on paper tbh.

My criteria is/was 100% same as yours funnily enough, i picked the megane.

Just done a 200mile round trip in it tonight with half it it blasting through the peak district and the other half sat a 3 figure speeds on the motorway. It did both amazingly.

Another vote for 130 here. Very good on fuel as well! Low 30's are easy to achieve.
