Hi All,
Been trying to fit my engine this weekend, but I can't get it to sit on the mounts. It seems a few mm too high.
I can get it to fit without the gearbox, but then when I try to bolt the box on, the box fouls on the top chassis rail.
I know from the various web sites that a few spacing washers between the engine and the top mounting brackets have worked, but not for me.
I have a thin piece of rubber on the sump support chassis, 2mm max.
The engine is supplied by American Speed, especially for the Ultima, so it has the correct sump fitted.
From my limited knowledge,it seems that the sump chassis rail is a few mm to high, which is acting like a fulcrum.
I will ring the factory in the morning anyway, but I was rather hoping that some of you builders will know what the options are, if any, before I do something drastic like drop the chassis rail a few mm!

The sump will sit on the rubber on the sump rail until you fit the transaxle. Then when the transaxle is fitted to its support at the rear it will lift it off the sump rail, well this is how it worked for me.
What type of transaxle are you using?
Mine was a G50/03 long box, I presume you have the box the right way up with the serial numbers on the top.
I put the engine in 1st on its own, then pushed the transaxle in from the rear at a angle on its side till it was nearly on the engine then turned it up the right way to fit as its very tight.

If I'm reading this right you need some washers between the engine mount and the engine block to lift the engine. Next you need to lower the back of the gearbox. To do this you may need to shave material from the tubes which are part of the box mount where they fit to the top cross rail.

Steve, I have tried washers between engine mounts and block, several in fact. There is a limit to how many you can use before it starts to have an adverse effect. (I have tried so many combinations!)
I can't shave the gearbox to miss the top rail. I'm down to the main casing, also I have the type of box where the breather passes through the top rail which does'nt help matters.

I had a lot of grief fitting engine with 7 1/2" sump (which I think is what AS speed fit) and G50/03 but my problem was clearance between sump and crossmember. There was always 10 mm or so clearance on top of box. I ended up switching to 7" sump. Final position of engine/box makes me think I could probably have got away with 7 1/2" sump and washers under mounts however. Things can sort themselves out when you get the gearbox mounts all tightened up.
I don't think the lower crossmember is a sump support though - the rubber should be there just to cushion it if torque/vibration does cause it to occasionally contact when clearance very tight. Certainly don't want any engine weight on x-member.

I think you have cracked it there!
I was being naive expecting an engine built for an ultima to fit in one without mods!
You are right, my sump is 7 1/2". Using a 7" would solve the problem, no question.
Where can I get one from and how long does it take.
I really need to get this engine in.

Don't be too hasty now! In retrospect I think the 7 1/2" would have squeezed in, but would certainly need washers to raise engine a bit. Just checked my car, it has about 10mm clearance below 7" sump and 10mm above box. Are all SBC blocks identical in terms of mount height? Seems some of us have more trouble than others getting engines in.
The 7" sump is much easier to fit for sure - may not be quite so good at keeping pick up covered in oil I suppose. I got my sump via Ultimate Spares America (01953601410), gave them the part no off Canton website (its a 15-240 for pre-80 block). You'll also need the pick up 20-020, a new gasket and a plug for oil level sensor port 22-405. Took a while to arrive however - you may be quicker going direct to a US mail order outlet. I have found JEGS.com excellent at getting stuff over here quickly, just prepare to choke when DHL ask for the extra cash to keep HMCE happy.

i have contacted the factory and they have been incredibly helpful as usual.
They want it to fit as much as I do.
They can't understand why the engine is sitting as it is. All AS engines should fit with only a few spacing washers needed in some cases.
They are going to make up some extension brackets for the engine mounts, which will give me more height than the washers can.
