I have just replaced a sealed unit in my conservarory. The original unit was 21 years old, and fitted when I built the conservatory. Everything has gone according to plan, but the old glazing putty had become very hard and stuck to the hardwood frame. The most difficult part of the job was removing the putty without damaging the frame.

I have three more units to replace, and would appreciate any suggestions as to how this could be done more easily next time.

You need one of these - wide edge to hit with a hammer, sharp edge to cut through the old putty.
Easy.

Agree, been doing the same today on wooden double glazed windows.

I've always just gone at it with a stanley knife. Most conservatories don't like being hit with hammers, even via a sharp chisel.

The units may not last long!

Replacing like with like, Originals were put in with putty as per instructions.

How long should I expect them to last? Of the original 14, 10 are fine after nearly 22 years.
