I've switched my breakdown cover to the AA as part of my bank account package instead of GEM, who I was very happy with.
I've been reading through the policy literature and it makes no mention of recovering to your home, only to a nearest garage. Now that isn't much use to me as I generally do all my work on my car myself, plus if anything is likely to go wrong it is almost certainly going to need a specialist to diagnose and fix it anyway.
With GEM I on the occasions I have had a problem I have called them, explained I need a low loader to take me home as it can't be towed and they have sent one and taken me home with no fuss.
Am I going to get the same service with the AA? If for instance I am 150 miles from my house, towing me to the nearest garage and leaving me there is going to be no use whatsoever to me.

If its with your bank i presume its lloyds or halifax and the level of cover depends on your account you can upgrade via your bank or AA direct, if its just the basic cover it will be roadside cover only and that means if unable to fix at the roadside then a tow to the closest garage or home, your choice but they work on a approximate 10 mile radius from where you breakdown
If its cover includes relay then its anywhere in the uk your choice

I just arranged some Green Flag breakdown cover through Direct Line..
Their top plan (~£70) includes recovery to any place of your choosing. Their next level down (~£60) offers recovery to the nearest garage only (or home if within 10 miles, IIRC).
Perhaps the AA offers a similar 'upgrade' to your existing package ?

The relay upgrade is more than the cost of my entire policy was with GEM which included two people and home start, overnight accommodation the lot!
Relay clearly takes you to anywhere in the UK you want to go to, but surely just going home would be included in the standard service. For instance, what if all garages near you are shut as it's the middle of the night? Surely they would have to take you home in that case?

Not if you live in say london and you breakdown in glasgow.Relay clearly takes you to anywhere in the UK you want to go to, but surely just going home would be included in the standard service. If you only have the roadside cover only then you can upgrade in a breakdown situation but its expensive as it becomes like a taxi service ie you pay by the mile Relay clearly takes you to anywhere in the UK you want to go to, but surely just going home would be included in the standard service. as someone said, it depends if your upgrade is silver, gold or platinum (or whatever)
I have AA roadside relay, which will take me anywhere in the UK (the plan is to get them to my Dads)
But the basic roadside is to a local garage.
You may be able to top up your AA cover? so the bank pay the first £60, and you add £10 or £15 (whatever it is) to get the relay.
Still, you're probably paying your bank now as well.
Maybe that card sentinal, or free foreign currency exchange will make it pay off?

Sounds like you have a 'silver' account, in which case you will have roadside assistance and accident management. Your vehicle will be recovered to the nearest garage to where you break down, not one near to your home.
