Morning All,

Just wondering if anyone might be able to give me some advice.

Our downstairs (2 up 2 down terrace) used to be 2 rooms that were knocked into one by the previous owner.

When we moved in we were going to have one half carpeted, with the other half having the boards sanded back and varnished. Due to the state of the boards we weren't able to do this. Unfortunately as the carpet had already been cut the carpet fitter had to put a dividing strip in the middle of the room where the 2 rooms join. This has always bothered me.......

Roll on 5 years to last summer, the old carpet was knackered so we had it replaced. It all looks great apart from a bit where the 2 rooms join (where the dividing strip was) where there is an undulation in the carpet that runs the width of the room. This wasn't noticeable at first as the carpet hadn't settled but it really bothers me.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to do to smooth it out!? My girlfriend thinks I am being very picky but ideally I would like to get it smoothed out.

I'd also like to add that the whole of the downstairs has been hardboarded and a good quality underlay was used. We did get the fitter back who weren't very helpful and said it was 'a sub-floor problem' that they couldn't do anything about.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,

Patrick

IS one floor lower than the other or is there a big hump where they join?

To even out a lower floor then I would suggest to hardboard or ply upto the higher height and then maybe go over the top of everthing to ensure its flat.

For a big hump I can only think of using a big belt sander and a long straight level, would be a horrible job and take ages.

If the carpet has been down for more than 6 months, I wouldn't bother.
The pile on the carpet will have been marked, flattened? whatever, and will still show
after you've sorted the floor. The time to do it is before the new carpet is put down.

PS-I've been in the carpet trade 38 years.
