using an Ipad as a Sat Nav in the USA
Discussion
We are going to California in a couple of weeks and will be driving in some of the big city's... We have a TomTom but I dont particularly want to spend £50 on a map we will only use for a week.
I also have an Ipad an dwe have a free navigation App that I have used quite successfully here in the UK, with the Ipad on my wifes lap. In some ways its better than the TomTom as its much bigger... there will always be 2 of us in the car when we are driving...
Anyone any experience in using an Ipad in the states for navigation? anyone recommend an App for the USA?
anyone comment if this is a good idea?

We just use Google Maps on the iPad.
All you have to do is load up your route in the morning, which means scrolling the route in various different map resolutions, and then setting forth.
It'll even work with the standard wifi iPad as well, because the map information seems to contain wifi location data as well, and the iPad will do quite a reasonable job in wifi only mode keeping up with your location as you are driving along.
Out on the open road it's not so good, but then you can easily work out where you are by doing a drive by of a MacDonald's.

requires use of 3g which is VERY expensive when roaming in the US, navfree is free and is much much better than tomtom, google maps and many others, I have them all so I should know :All you have to do is load up your route in the morning, which means scrolling the route in various different map resolutions, and then setting forth.

Ipad have a "real GPS" that works without wifi location.

And to do the above does not require 3G either. It'll work perfectly as I said. And I know that because we used it during the summer doing exactly that

The key is to load up Google Maps in advance on a wifi connection (like in your hotel).

No navfree doesnt require 3g or wifi, it stores all maps on the device, 1.3 GB of it for the US version.
navfree is a real nav application with guidance etc, try it yourself, its free

Well you better tell Apple then

Wifi model doesn't have gps. As I said earlier, cache the maps, and use the wifi to locate yourself. Basic, but can get you out of a hole. We did this last summer in Europe for instance.
Copilot USA is (or at least was a few weeks back) £2.99 in the App Store. It worked great on my iPhone for getting us around California without eating up data with google maps. Download in iTunes and then transfer though, it's 1.2GB in size.
Bear in mind that the wifi-only iPad doesn't have GPS built in - only the 3G ones do.
