How did you choose who to use as a driving instructor?
My first lessons were a birthday present and my parents just used yellow pages to choose.
I passed while I was still at school and my instructor asked me to give recommendations and put some posters up at school afterwards. I'm glad he never gave me the posters as he was a total TIT.

I passed after about 20 lessons over a month or so...had to fit the theory test in as well as lead time on booking my test
all adds up to more time I had been driving before hand too, crashed 2 cars in that short time!
broke the wheel off one of the pool cars at dads factory... D'oh! and yes I was driving like a clown! and no i don't drive like that any more ETA - You fool, there was an option for ad in local paper!
ended up with a Megane diesel, at least it was a the 2.0 130bhp version stabbed rat said:

learnt to drive an auto ('69 Corvette stingray) when I was 13 and a manual Mk2 Escort RS2000 when I was about 14/15. Learnt to slide and control slides etc at about 16 in an Omega
Ahhhh feck it ! It's late ..... I have work in 3hours 19 minutes and havn't slept since 7yesterday morning ...... Happy times !
Yellow pages... but that was 13 or so years ago These days it would just be a quick google search and whoever was the cheapest.
My driving instructor was a one man band instructor. Really large, horrible man and used to get really abusive when you did something wrong. I stuck with him because I hated the man so much that I was determined to pass my test so I never had to see him again... and he was only £15 an hour (standard rate was between £20-25 at the time)
Obviously worked. I passed with only a few minor errors.

I'm not joking, I'm almost 20 now so it was only a couple of years ago! 
I guess at that moment in time getting the yellow pages out was easier than going to the other end of the house to the office lol. I used two indtructers. First had a Nova and picked me up from home (in the country), spent 8 lessons hooning round the A roads but didn't perform any of the mandatory manoeuvres so moved on. Then used a guy with a Metro (as I bought one for my first car) and did about 10 lessons with him and passed first time.
For my bike test I used a DAS trainer and passed at the end of the weeks training. Edit to say, never been on a bike prior to that not even a 50cc.
All this talk of theory tests and such makes me feel old.
