sounds like a belt of some sort. i daren't say cheap to fix considering it's an 8er but if it is just a belt then shouldn't hurt too much!

Where is the squeak coming from? Behind the steering wheel, under the bonnet, under the car? Is it on full lock, any steering wheel movement? A bit more info would help.

I had the same on a 750i years ago, BMW said new rack as was warped a tiny bit as the steering wheel boss didn't scibe a perfect circle anymore. Rubbed a bit on the plastic cowling from lock to lock. Try liberal WD40 behind wheel?

Have you checked your pentosin levels properly?
Engine off - preferable to do this after the car has been standing a while.
Pump the brake pedal until it goes down and is hard - should be on average around 15 pumps.
Check Pentosin level in the reservoir, should be about 1cm from the top of the canister, if it's low or below the gauze filter top it up a wee bit - don't overfill it though or the next time you leave the car parked for a while as the brake bomb de-pressurizes the car will dump the excess pentosin all over the place and make a dear old mess. Use only the correct type of Pentosin, 7 or 11, it will be labelled on the canister (green label).
