I'm going to a wedding in a few weeks and have been trusted to 'sort out the music'. As one of the youngest and most tech-savvy I have agreed. I really want to give it my best to make the night as memorable as possible.

The wedding is in a hotel. Both have been married before and are both late-40's. The evening event will run from 7 until about 1ish and therefore I need 6 hours of 'wedding music' on CD.

I will attempt to make 6 CD's which build up in momentum. I want to include the wedding favourites but also a few credible numbers aswell. Any genres (within reason) and all decades. They don't have strong music tastes so nothing specialist is required. Assuming the newer stuff will come on as the night progresses.

So any suggestions for must haves or things should consider?

Cheers,

i'll run a search on my dj software if you want and mail you 7-8 hrs of what i'd personally call party type music, extract what you know wont work as you know the bridge/groom and presumably some of their pals....

My site has two wedding mixes on it - 'Wedding' (my set at my own wedding), and 'Sun Kissed Wedding' (a set at a friends wedding in Ibiza last year).

Neither would help you, but wat the hell - this is PH after all! hehe

FWIW...i wouldnt personally suggest using cd's unless there's no alternative - cos the options to jog on are a bit limited as you wont probably know what song is up next....
better to load them onto a lappie and use media player or that thing folks use called i tuuuunes.

no idea what the happy couple expect from their evening but if you have a 6 hr window then you might consider:
a degree of music that is background based - the sort of stuff that if it was playing in a puc would get your feet tapping or would 'wash' over you if ity wanst your cup of tea.
then start to ramp it up a bit with stuff that might get a few of the ldies up there - remembering that you'll need a few slow ones here and there and gradually work towards the real floorfillers. I'm no dj but have done a fair few parties for people as well as my own and if you're trying to pre-paln as opposed to doing what a 'live dj' would do - then make sure that you only have a certain amount of minutes of teh same style of songs, ie/ 8 mins disco followed by 5-6 mins rock n roll - that way, if it isn't quite hitting the spot for some folks it'll only be a few mins before something comes along to tickle their fancy ( especially a wedding where i imagine the age range will be varied).

good luck and hope it goes well.

Have you thought about using a live band for some of the music?

At my wedding, I addressed the assembled crowd, and said "I'd
like to dedicate this song to my new wife, Christine, this is
a song called "Love Song"". After a few aaahhs from various
people the forewarned DJ put on Love Song, by the Damned. One
of my favourites.

From experience of running live bands and DJ's at numberous weddings, I'd recommend finding out about any breaks like evening buffet, cake cutting etc.. As this will stop the flow, and also what time the meal finshes, as people rarely get straight up from eating and dance....
I'd vary the genres and don't stick to one kind of style for more than 4 or 5 songs....
