What to replace a E39 with?

With my 181k BMW on its last legs I am seeking a replacement. The BM is great, equivilent to 45mpg (due to LPG), total comfort and quick 530iA.
Seeking a replacement for 20,000 per year to fill the following criteria.
Reliable - a lot newer
45mpg+ average - higher the better
Leather
Few toys - sat nav, xenons, auto box etc would be nice but not essential.
Purchase price is irrelevant but I don't want it to cost more than £2500/year in depreciation (based on 3yrs ownership).
Thoughts are:
Specced up 2008/2009 Cooper D
Passat 170 DSG Estate with toys!
Alpina D3.

Ah the e39 owner's dilemma.
I've given up looking at the moment as whenever I got back into the e39 after a test drive, I immediately think 'I must be mad..'
But the shortlist, when the sad day comes, will be something like..
Alpina B3 or B5 (tried both, nice, blinking fast but I don't particularly like the models they are based on.)
Jag XF (probably the favourite)
Probably the F10 5 series though it's virtually impossible to get a drive in anything but a 520d. Not sure about the looks, mind.
Golf R, but only when they come down from their crazy prices.
And that's about it for me. If they made a 535d/550i e39, I'd buy one.

Another E39 with lower miles and move over your LPG kit.
I've been horribly disappointed with the E60s I've driven. Can't get on with the Idrive, terrible ride and a low rent interior that makes my Ford look good in places. Bloody great engines in some of them though but as an overall package the E39 is better IMO.
As an aside my mate has just gone over to a 2006 E60 530i from his 528i E39 (he has litte imagination and had an E34 before that
) and rates it better in terms of NVH, the engine and brakes but hates the steering.
The E39 is a hard act to follow.

I've done that so many times now. I've had my E39 for nearly ten years. The nearest I got to finding something else was a Jaguar XF last year. However, I am now thinking BMW F10. Still one of the best cars I have had, if not the best.

+1I gave one of the new shape five series a close look the other day.
Seemed quite good, except close examination shows
it is quite a bit larger than the E39.
478 cm versus 491 cm.
Of course, I've got a five metre garage, so that makes
the new shape five series a non-starter, which is a shame.
I've been forced to consider either a 3 series, which puts
me in very ordinary car territory, or a M-B, which is
pipe'n'slippers dullsville AFAIK.
I can't imagine for a moment Lexi are available with
cloth seats and wipe down surfaces.
I have had 5 E39's including 3 M5's (on one at the moment) and its flaws are two fold
Rust and Fuel ecconomy. The good thing is that E39's are still pretty common and most are very cheap so if the worst were to happen you can always get another.
