Chaps:

Blimmin' Chimaera has taken to be a pain in the posterior since January. A long list of minor ailments that have kept it, by and large, off the road...

The Mrs (whose car it is) is nearing the end of her tether - which I'd prefer to stave off a while longer yet.

Latest problem: Hot starting troubles. On Sunday we ended up having to push the Chim off Shell's forecourt by the pump we'd just used to fill it and into a little lay-by they have.

So I pop the bonnet and sure enough - the HT lead going into the coil has come off - second time in three days. I shove the bugger back on...but by now I think the electronics have decided that since we're trying to start it and failing it must be being stolen because no joy. In fact although the red ignition lights come on the fans do not start up (its hot remember) and the starter motor doesn't turn.

We leave it half and hour - and then it start up fine.

At the moment my diagnosis is that the car's electronics/immobiliser is being fooled into thinking the car is being nicked (due to the disconnected HT lead) and its causing the problem...

My proposeed cure: New HT leads.

Does this sound plausible? Or is the starter motor cream crackered. Anyone had similar?

Why is the king lead coming off the coil?

Could be sorted by just pinching the lead end...

I went through 4 coils due to it overheating and then leaking oil.

Every now and again this would manifest itself as a starting issue (unsuprisingly).

I'm no TVR expert, but this rings a bell. A friend had a Chimeara a few years back, and he had the same problem. I think, if I recall correctly, it was something to do with the starter motor. The heat expanded something, to the extent it would not start. But don't hold me to it. I could very well be talking cr@p.

Interesting. I just posted something that might help you in this thread
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=98342&f=11&h=0

But to save you going there this is what I posted!:

Note that Magnecors sometimes need a slight mod before fitting.

There were some reports that the leads kept popping off the plugs. The remedy for this was that there should have been a small hole in the rubber to allow air realease when fitting it to the plug. Some of these holes werent holes. IE they were still filled with rubber!
Make small holes were they should be and all is OK.

Talk to Tim Lamont (2 sheds) about Magnecors to get the real story. When I got my set from him, he mentioned that there were some incorrect rumours about fitment doing the rounds. Re starter motors, a guy in my region (Dave Lewis) worked out the issue in detail. Mail me if you want more info on this, as he's not a regular PH user.

Cheers,

Steve.

In a previous thread somebody reported that the breather hole in the plug boot on Magnecor leads ocassionally gets blocked making it difficult to push the leads on properly, this was verified by Magnecor however this only relates to certain Jap engines, NOT TVR sets.
Simple as that.

My starter has seized twice since I got the car, both times after either leaving the car idling for a long period of time and the other whilst in a petrol station and had to be pushed of the forecourt!

I am going to get the heat shroud kit for this problem and clean up the solenoid assembly, the way to confirm that it is the starter solenoid is when it seizes try starting the car and if the ignition lights dim when you try to start it, it is definitely the solenoid stuck.

A quick fix is to pour water over the solenoid!

I remember doing that... back has never been the same since!

IIRC Mod-Wise do a heat shield...
