Hi all,

My car, a 2001 X308 XJ8 4.0, has developed a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. It started whilst on the motorway, I put it down to low oil as the car was due a service. I pulled into the nearest halfords and put 4l of oil into the car as it was low on the dipstick, but the noise still persists.

The noise is quite a loud knocking that persists when revved. Sounds a little noisy for pistonslap but not sure.

What's the ph diagnosis and cost estimation? Am I royally screwed?

Ta in advance,

Chris

Sounds like it if you had to put 4Lts in

Cost wise, S/H engine and labour £1,500/2,000 if you're lucky, more like £2,500

4 litres yikes

Most cars are 0.5 - 1 litre from bottom to top marks on the dipstick.

4 litres sounds a lot? Car only takes about 6.5l. it might have just snapped a chain tensioner get it checked out before fearing the worst.

Doesn't sound great, thanks for all the comments and advice so far.

Could anybody recommend me a specialist in the North West that might be able to help?

I'll say it once biggrin

My dad uses these guys for his Jag. He rates them very highly. He recently had a gearbox failure. They offered a second-hand unit fitted for £1000, before he opted for the recon.
