How To Sell My Car?

Now that I've ordered the MX 5 I find myself in a short time to be the owner of three cars.
I'd really appreciate a bit of advice.
I am a crap salesman, and also don't have the time to deal with callers. Neither do I really want strangers turning up to where I live.
I have sold two cars privately in the past, but they were pre-arranged sales. A Volvo which when I got new a good mate loved and asked for first refusal on if I sold it. We got it valued by a garage and knocked a couple of hundred quid off.
The other, A car I needed shot of that I sold to a chap I knew of a forum for a pre-agreed price.
So, what are the alternatives to putting it up for sale on Autotrader/Ebay/here etc.
I understand by selling it by other means will involve less cash for me.
The car. A 2001 MGF. Nice little car, very clean massive service history and up to last summer, a show car. That is to say, I took it to country shows with my mate and his 88 Quattro rather than as part of some anoraky owners club.
It may have HGF. Just developed. It could be a leaky manifold. Morally I should get this fixed, but if punting out to an aution/dealer I might have a think. Again, adice appreciated on this too.
Assuming I get it mended properly.
Would a used car dealer be interested in selling in on my behalf? I use his time, facilities etc and give him a cut of the final price.
Auction. Could someone explain how this works please. I just drive up with all the docs and leave it to them? What about a reserve? What is my liability if someone buys it and it blows up the next minute.
Selling to a trader and walking away.
I have a third option, which is giving it free of charge to a friend who could do with a favour and who has done me favours in the past.

Well if your mate wants it and can get it fixed, that would be the option I would take (though be prepared for him not to do any of the work required and for the car to just rust away to nothing - maybe that's just one of my friends!).
Alternatively, there are places who claim that they will buy any car.. It might not be a good price, but it will get shot of the car quickly.

I don't think it's worth lots at all. That's why I am prepared to give it away to a mate if he needs it. I just want to get shot and not get that done in the process.
The milage is 30K.
I place I bought it from 4 years ago appears to like them and presently has 3 or 4 F and TFs on its forecourt.
Obviously I am biased but of all the cars I've owned, some nice and new, its the only car that at a decade old, gets positive comments from passers by.
I now wish I'd have presued an offer I had last summer from a bloke in a pub car park. Just some random punter who caught up with me in the bar to talk about the motor. He wanted one for his wife and assumed they weren for around 10 grand second hand!!!!
I wasn't interested in selling them, but when I told him the sort of price they go for it was food for thought.
I guess it's worth more as spare parts. It would be a shame to break it as apart from the coolant leak, it is spot on.
Not that it matters to a trader, but I am told by some MG club that it is one of six built to the spec. Jewish racing gold, black leather and engine option.
Do you reckon a car auction would be a good place to shift it.

If you owe a mate a favour then give it to him if you're in a position to give away a few hundred quid.
In my experience, I'd never sell a car to a friend though. The one time I did a "favour" by giving the car to a mate and then he paid me the money on pay day's (set amounts) it turned into a nightmare and he avoided me... We don't speak anymore!
If I was you, I'd put it on PH for a few weeks at a reasonable price, be totally honest about the car so you don't waste anyones time coming to view it / wasted phone calls. Worth a try... even if someone comes and knocks you down a bit then you've got rid of it with a few reddies in your pocket.

Yes totally agree to selling to a freind. I only sold the Volvo to my mate becasue he asked if he could have it when I had finished with it. The car was still under warranty.
I am leaning towards giving it to my mate. He is holding off as he has to sort somewhere to keep it. I would get it fixed before I gave it to him too. After that it would be up to him if it went wrong. It's not cost him a bean so if he wants to sell it, scrap it, make a few bob then its up to him.
I got such a good deal on the MX5 and it was so better dealing over the net and the phone without getting PX involved, though a few of the dealers I spoke to seemed to want a PX. But probably not an MGF!

That's very noble of you, but you do know that if it is HGF, then a proper repair with the modified parts is quite expensive if you get it done by a garage? I know someone who had it done on the same engine, different car (ie presumably easier access) and IIRC it cost something approaching £800.Obviously there will be plenty of people posting now who know where you can get it done for a tenner!
Put it up on the PH classifieds and see what happens.
I had an Anniversary edition about a year ago and took a while to sell it.
Im sure someone on here might buy it, i could probably have my arm twisted to part with about £500 for one, spend some time getting the HG sorted and you have a convertible for the summer.
