Anyone got any ideas on this one?

I bought a new bike a few weeks ago and within the first five miles got a puncture.

Bit of a ballache, I'm plagued by punctures as my tyres are thorn-magnets however on removing the tube it appeared to be more of a split to a seam. I assumed it was a faulty tube and bought a new one.

I then had to lay the bike up because just in time for the nicer weather I trapped a nerve in my neck but decided to try it briefly last night, again a quick five miles round the block.

Went to take it out again tonight and there's another flat. Ballache once again, took the tube off and the same sort of split has appeared at exactly the same point on the new tube (and I mean exactly).

I can't find any protrusion from the rim (which is obviously new anyway) at all.

Strange things are afoot. Does anyone have a clue?

Well inflated. Can't see that being the issue to be honest, the split occurs on the underside of the tube where it seats against the top of the spokes (if that makes any sense).

Is the rim tape fitted correctly?

(or did you put the old tube back in....!!!?)

Forgive me if this is stupid but how could the rim tape be fitted incorrectly?

No I didn't put the old tube in, I've got them both which is how I was able to see that the punctures are in an identical spot.

Whatever caused the original puncture is still in the tyre. Take it off, turn it inside out and look/use your hand to find it. If it's glass you'll probably cut yourself hehe

It isn't.

Eliminate the impossible. Whatever remains, however improbable must be the truth biggrin

Match your tube up to the tyre via the valve and the problem will be there. Your finger tips are the best thing for finding foreign bodies.

I have this problem, it was solved with duct tape and carboard.

On my tyre it was the one of the thin wires that make up the carcass of the tyre, it was stabbing down into the tube puncturing it. I found the errant tyre and covered it over with the above method.

The solution to your problem is you need to make sure you know where the tube was in relation to the tyre when you take it off next. Pump the tube up without the tyre, and find the hole. Then all you need to do is look inside the tyre for the corresponding offender!

If not check the inside of the rim for sharp edges, i advise using your hands not your eyes as your fingers are more sensitive for finding irregularities in the body of the tyre or wheel.

Guys, it isn't the tyre.

The splits are in a part of the tube that sits right against the rim tape. It's all brand new, I can't locate any protruding spokes, bits of metal, anything...

+1 for duck taping the spoke holes

I had the same problem years ago

Just like you I knew it wasnt the rim however after yet another puncture removed the rim tape, duck taped each spoke orifice, refitted the rim tape and had no more problems

Rim tape: this was what caused my turbo trainer puncture the other day. The wheel used hard plastic rim tape which had taken a 'set' and moved off-centre under pressure, exposing the sharp edges of several spoke holes, each of which was in the process of cutting a hole in the inside face of the innertube.

Run some electrical insulation tape over the rim tape? I mean just give it a try, seems that it can't hurt, and the added weight would surely be unnoticeable. What do you have to lose?

easy solution, if it is not the tyre then it must be the rim.. so just put a strip of electrical tape or gaffer tape where the splits keep happening. Then if it does happen again the tape will be marked as well

I had the same sort of problem when I got my road bike. I did about 3 miles and got a flat, then did another 5 or so and got another. Luckily a nice old lady gave me a lift home in the back of her pick-up truck.

I took the bike back to the shop, and they re-lined the wheels with better rim tape, and I've not had any problems since. I couldn't see anything with the naked eye, or feel anything when I ran a finger over it it, but maybe under pressure something came through just enough to rub a hole after about 5 miles...

Sounds like you're pinching the tube between the rim and the tyre when fitting it, or being overzealous with tyre levers

Read it again, the bike is brand new. I'm an old hand with punctures and I've not seen this before.

Thanks for all the responses on here, main culprit is I guess the rim tape. It hasn't been breached but it seems quite brittle and I'm wondering if the edge could have torn the tubes under pressure.

Did you buy both inner tubes from the same shop?

Nope, the first tube was original equipment on the bike, the replacement tube just came from the nearest place.

Edited to add, Why?

Just wondered if it was a bad batch of tubes maybe. In that case run your fingers over the spoke nipples underneath the rim tape in the area where you're getting punctures but even so I would expect to see a small pinch puncture rather than a tear along a seam.
