43K Miles on a used BMW 1 Series. Is that too many?

Hello everyone,

Just looking for some advice here.

The BMW ive seen is a 120i Sport 5-door has 43K miles on the clock and is a 2004 model. If average use for a used car is 10K miles a year I guess 43K miles isn't too bad for a car that 7-8years old?

But saying that is a car that's 7-8years old still going to give me a good few years use?

If this is a genuine question then I'll give a genuine answer. You have nothing to worry about so long as the car has been properly looked after and maintained.

I have a 2004 E46 which is nearing 100k.

I had my level 2 Inspection yesterday and no work needed doing, nope, nothing, nada

100% BMW history though, which can be a very important sign of a well looked after car.

Heh, I thought it would be on a year-old car! This sounds like absolutely nothing to worry about, just make sure it's been looked after, as said. You could average 10k a year for ten more years without stretching that car

From what I've seen the 1 series is a pretty tough little car. I drove a couple before I settled on mine, the age ranged from 2005 to 2008, mileage also from 18,000 to 112,000. All of them felt the same to drive (perhaps the 112k was slightly softer on its suspension than the others), but if you get one with a decent service history and an owner that takes care of it, then you can't really go wrong.

If you have any specific concerns about a 1er you like, pop a message on www.babybmw.net - the guys there can probably even tell you the thickness of the paint on your car when it left the factory, great source of info for the 1-series.

No car is fault free be it one a week old or 20 years old but it should be fine for another 40k at least without needing anything more then regular servicing and consumables.

One thing I would check is the old MOT's and service history as the mileage is very low for a car 7 years old.

Of bigger concern would be why you are looking at a car with BMW's worst engine for years. the 20i has nothing going for it over the 20d engine which is quicker and more economical. The 20i doesnt even sound nice!

Barely run in, my 16 month old 120d has 30k on it now.

BMW 1 series blow up and kill all occupants at 43.5k Miles. That is why this is for sale.

As you can see I know nothing about cars :P

The car is from an authorized BMW dealership. So im assuming they will have all the service history of the car?

They have the car already at the dealership but they have said they need to run checks on it before they can sell it. What do you guys think they are checking for here?

Like I said, whether or not it's due to explode. It's touch and go at that age. I'd avoid personally.

Sorry, BMWs only work up to 15k, after that you really are on your own.
I've an E30 myself and since it passed 15k I've been amazed for over 150k miles, it really shouldn't still be working. Your mileage may vary.

Ask about the power steering pump, mine went at 60k, £450 to put right. Common fault I was told.

As for the 20i being the worst engine, surely not as bad as a 116i?

Don't forget to make sure they have filled up the headlights and disconnected the indicators for you.

Of the above, I'd say the 120d is the one to go for owing to good compromise between performance and economy.
