Getting a private plate off a car that's SORN

Hi Guys,
I was wondering if someone could help.
I've got a mate who has a car that is SORN - No tax / MOT and not at all likely to pass an MOT. IT does however have a private plate that he bought seperately and wants to transfer to a new car.
The DVLA are however saying that he can't transfer the plate off because the car isn't taxed, and of course it can't be taxed because it's not going to pass an MOT.
The best advice the pleb head on teh phone could give was 'um.. scrap it, but you'd lose the plate'
Any advice?

Can only be done without MOT/Tax etc if the Sorn was made as soon as the last tax disc expired and is within 6 months of being off the road (they can be a little bit flexible but not by much)
After that - It will need the process of Insurance, MOT and Tax to remove the plate
If it's a basket case and not worth the spend he's lost the plate

Conditions for transferring a registration number
You can’t transfer a registration number:
* starting with ‘Q’ or ‘NIQ’ for Northern Ireland registered vehicles
* if it will make the vehicle it’s being transferred to look younger
To transfer the registration number, both vehicles must be:
* registered at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
* available for inspection
* of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate
* currently taxed
However, if the vehicle that currently has the registration number is not taxed, you can still apply to transfer provided:
* there is no break between the date the tax disc runs out and the start of the SORN
* the tax disc run out no more than 12 months before the date you apply
