Running an E30 as DD?
Discussion
Hello fellow PH'ers,
Greetings from Denmark!
I'm currently looking at E30 325i 4-doors as a DD. Also looking at 106/306 GTi's.
Having only owned French/Italian cars before, I'm not sure what running costs and ownership experience would be like owning an old 'Beemer.
As cars in Denmark are roughly twice as expensive as opposed to the UK, my budget of £3.5-4K only gets me a 4-door.
Where can I find a buyers guide? Will running the old E30 be more dear than running a 106 or 306 GTi?
I know it will drink petrol like orange juice, but is there anything else I need to beware of, besides RUST that is?
Currently looking at these two cars(DANISH WEBSITE):

Also considering E34 525i 24V's, but reliability horror stories and sheer size have put me slightly off.
Thanks in advance!

The M20 is a thirsty engine so running costs will be a bit of a b
h. My 325 track car was on par with my M62 4.4 in my 740 (22mpg around town and 28 on a run) - and that was significantly lighter than a standard 4 door.
Rust is a big problem. Inner sills, inner wings, battery tray, scuttle panel, windscreen, jacking points. Time hasn't been kind to them.
What horror storied have you heard of the M50'd E34 525i? These are one of the most robust cars to ever roll off BMW's production line. The are superb old things. On balance, an E34 525 is probably the best of the bunch as a standard car.

I've got a 325i touring that i use as my DD. Can echo others on here. low 20's around town but achieving 30.4mpg on a motorway run (I do 4,000 miles a month in it).
I'd like something with a diesel in it for the mileage I do but I love it.
Also. tourings are cheaper than Saloons and they don't rust half as badly as saloons either. Might be worth a look?
Lowered - they have a really good stance too. Fantastic cars.
