I'm removing the K&N filter and base plate from a DHLA carb to switch to socks as filter can't be fitted due to space. On removal I've noticed the small bore hole above the left trumpets above each carb. Originally with the filter on, this hole shared a gasket with the trumpets and there is a hole in the back plate of the filter to accommodate this.

My question is what does this do? I was assuming it's some kind of vent. With the socks fitted, it's exposed and many of the images I've found online show this just left as it is in that picture. Is this the correct thing to do, or does it need some form of mesh or grille to cover it in anyway?

Thanks in advance.

I see, so advisable to filter it then. Ideally we'd keep the filter on, but there just isn't the room.

Potentially dirt can get drawn into the hole which is why I'm not a fan of sock type filters
That, and the vastly lower airflow potential compared to a single large filter.

Not just advisable, it's essential to filter it otherwise your idle jets will block up in very short order.
