Why do some people hide the reg number in an advert?

Why??? Surely anybody passing a car on the road can see it, so why hide it in an advert? What am I missing?

Cloning, car theft, photos being used by Nigerian scammers at some point, insurers prying eyes with regards to modifications, etc etc

It is much quicker and more convenient for a thief to find a car online and clone that particular number plate than it is to go out and find their specific car on the road.. I guess people are just trying to reduce that risk

As mentioned, its much easier to check online for a silver vectra/mondeo on here or autotrader, then having a wander around your area.
