Wasn't sure which forum to put this in...

Anyhoos, how soon after eating something dodgy can you expect to be sitting on the pan with the trots?

Is 1 hour possible? Can something go through you that fast?

Apologies, I've no idea on the workings of my digestive system.

i have had to run home from a curry house before now.if it was the starter that was the culprit , yes an hour is possible. in my case i think the place uses an ingredient that does not agree with me. others who eat there never have the same problem where as i always do. actually used to as i no longer eat there.

I know a guy who ate a dodgy prawn sandwich from a petrol station and he was seeing triple before he got home. God know what bug it was but it much have been a toxin to act that fast.

Friend of mine gets the runs after eating pepper sauce, typically within 30 mins. Still eats it every time she goes out...

People are quick to blame a meal, a sandwich, whatever.

And yet they'll quite happily start stuffing crisps in their face 2 mins after grabbing the door handle of the stter out back of the petrol station which might be home to some pretty diverse bacterial multiculturalism. That's not to say we should live in a sterilised oxygen tent, but you can pick up nasty gut-bugs from all sorts of places. -Mainly because people spread them over all sorts of places.

But the first thing you notice when you're puking yourself inside out is the last thing you ate, so you blame that.

It could be Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The mere act of eating can trigger it.

I'm prone to this and consequently have to watch what I eat. Rich food + strong coffee = an hour's grace before 'bad things' happen.

Excellent. Shall we try to recreate the legendary "thirty clowns wearing oversize rubber shoes having a sprinting race over a massive bowl of jelly" post at chez Council Baby?

The OH says it takes 24 hours. The OH is stupid.

My throat will clam up within a minute or two of eating/drinking something I shouldn't. Then within 15-30 minutes. I still don't understand the exact biology that pushes it through so quickly though, can soemone enlighten me?

Something to do with the colon beng affected and not able to reabsorb water I believe. The 'throat clamming up' sound smore like an allergic/hypersensitive reacion.

But there are many kinds of food poisoning caused by various microorganisms - from memory not just Salmonella but Listeria, E. coli and the real nasty, Clostridium. They produce toxins and that's what causes the effect/s.

Depends on the type of food poisoning e.g. the bacteria involved.

Missus was ill after a dodgy curry within 20 mins of eating it and was throwing up from front while spraying from behind simultaneously. Fortunately, the dog was more than happy to lick the spew up from her legs while her arse was pointing at the pan (I kid you not!)

Alternatively, 7 of us went out for a meal and 4 of us chose mussels as a starter. 12 hours later, the first of the 4 went down with dizziness, lethargy, nausea and then the spewing and trotting. 14 hours later, the other 2 got the same. I thought I'd got away with it and was just suffering a mild hangover until about 15 hours after eating the mussels, I too was wiped out for a day or two.

There are some cases where a jar of potted meat was found to be infected with clostridium. 4 people ate the meat - 1 died, 1 was ill, the other 2 had no ill effects. I've also eaten some old ham which gave an old girlfriend food poisoning, but didn't seem to affect me at all. But one bad pint will give me a dose of the squirts easily. Funny things, stomachs.

Viewed from a self-defence POV, the action of the body to expel the harmful matter as quickly as possible from whichever hole happens to be nearest is probably good - rather than have the injurious stuff on-board for any longer.

Evolution in action I suspect. The caveman who ate dodgy meat and didn't throw up died before he had children.

I think you were and still are, but you may have had to have seen the relevant pages within the Trivia thread.

Perhaps contact Mr Baby, as its not my house and for all I know you've done something unspeakably horrid to him.
