Fascinating description of the findings of the GOCE satellite re. gravity 'rates' around the globe.

Probably the wrong forum but where else, isn't it time PH had a 'Science and Mathematics' forum?

It is indeed fascinating.

However, some of us are more interested in the astronomy side of this story.

So, PH has a problem. Do we have an "astronomy" section? Perhaps a "physics" section?

At the moment, most astronomy related topics take place in "Boats Trains and Planes".

My gut feeling is that a "Science" section would be appropriate.

Guam - if you're still logged on and not looking in the tv section you may have missed my post about 'The Joy of Stats' on BBC 2 starting just now. Bet you'll like it!

Sounds quite a difference:

So Sri Lankans are the lightest people in the world, but Brits and Aussies are amongst the heaviest?

That's not fair!

I have argued that Astronomy was inappropriate for Planes and Boats since the whole PH massive changes of April 2009.

The nature of the TV forum is that the subject matter of the programmes get discussed there. This means the TV forum ends up with topics that really are better placed in more appropriate forums.

If we get a science forum, can we have a 'bad science' forum for the homeopathy and climate science stuff?

Hey LB what did you think of the suggestion by the Microsoft Guy (IIRC) suggesting we could be moving to a Post Heuristic Science, IE "Datacentric Science", due to the power of computing and the amount of available data now?

Even as someone well versed in Statistics, I would be uncomfortable with that in practice (theoretically valid of course). Look how well it has worked in Climate Science for instance smile
A frightening thought! The mass of data around now (and ever increasing) is a double edged saw; a blessing in some ways but adding difficulty and complexity to those on the front line, so yes, fine, use the power of computing to help maximise the benefits of the information, but don't throw the baby out with the bath water for God's sake.

I think astrology is a load of tosh.

Which is unusual for a Cancer.

The term "I think" is also unusual for anyone who believes in astrology.

Absolutely and Move all the climate Change Threads in there as well.

It actually makes sense, as there is major overlap in various scientific discussions and the whole Climate change debate. Indeed discussions on Essenhigh and such, I have often felt would warrant a seperate thread from the debate per se (as the politics does). Certainly topics like Chaos Theory and helping those debating the climate would benefit from a seperate discussion on the broader concept of Chaos Theory.

Cheers
Surely that belongs in the religion forum biggrin
